My whole adult career has revolved around natural sciences. I studied Microbiology and Human Biology in college, then pursued an 8-year career in research. After earning my MBA, I was a manager in hospitals and medical clinics. My favorite part of management involved training and mentoring staff, and so I entered the teaching profession 18 years ago and taught high school science classes until retirement two years ago. I am passionate and enthusiastic about science and love teaching the subject to students. I also even take science vacations - wildlife safaris in Africa, visits to penguin colonies in Patagonia and Antarctica, wildlife viewing in the Rocky Mountains, and one of my favorite sites in London is the "whisper spot" inside St. Paul's Cathedral.
For the past two years, I have been tutoring students, and really enjoy working with them one-on-one. I work with their classroom materials and assist them to improve lab reports, understand homework problems and science concepts and write mock exam questions to help them improve their test performance. In addition, I work as a part-time substitute teacher for middle school and high school students.
I am a retired biology teacher with 16+ years experience teaching high school biology, AP Biology, introductory chemistry, basic geology and earth science. Since retirement, I have tutored students privately and really enjoy teaching one-on-one. I come to your home for lessons, and will provide pre-prepared lecture materials and problem sets to help you achieve. In addition, I enjoyed a career as a research biochemist before becoming a teacher, so I can really help students with lab work.
I am enthusiastic about natural science and have a track record of effectiveness: my students achieved a 95% pass rate on the AP Biology exam, and as a group earned scores of "4" or "5" 4-5 times more frequently than the national average.
I am available after school and evenings by appointment, and charge only for our face-to-face time. I prepare all lecture materials, test-prep questions and other visual aids on my own time. Katherine knows her stuff and current high school curriculum, so can answer all the questions and review the materials. Her slides are informative and easy to understand. Thanks Katherine for helping my daughter to prepare for her final exam.
She is a ray of sun! We were blessed to find Katherine and my daughter's Science grade has risen from a high C to a high A, in just a few sessions. High Praise from a very thankful mom:)
She always goes the extra mile to help my daughter, and she is very responsible. You can see the passion of what she teaches in her and she patiently helps my daughter to understand concepts.
Katherine is the subject matter expert in AP Biology. She is very organize, articulate, patient and thoughtful. My son benefited a lot from her lessons. Highly recommended!!!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
