Hello!

I am a writing professional and experienced admissions consultant with a BA from the University of Chicago in English and an MA from Stanford in Communications. I work with students to craft their undergraduate and graduate admissions essays or help with their homework and essay writing.

College applications: I have worked with over 250 students on their college admissions application and essays. Past clients have received admission (and scholarships!) to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, MIT, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Caltech, UChicago, Duke, UPenn, Berkeley (including Berkeley Regents) and more. I have read and evaluated over 600 applications to the #3-ranked University of Chicago for regular and transfer admissions cycles. I have interviewed dozens of applicants in the Bay Area and know the secret ratings colleges are using to rate applicants. Many of my clients have been Bay Area locals; others have hailed from England, China, India, New Jersey, Michigan, Florida, Illinois, North Carolina, Missouri, Southern California and many other locations!

Graduate applications: I have worked with many students applying to International Dental School, PhD, and master's degree programs, as well as business school. Whether you are straight out of undergrad or returning to school years into your professional career, I can help you refine your personal statement and statement of purpose, improve your resume, and brush up on your interview skills.

Essays: I am a writing professional and have years of experience at both academic and professional levels in crafting essays. Your child and I will begin by discussing successful strategies for essay writing, and will then brainstorm ideas. I will be with them throughout the writing process and will support them by giving constructive feedback and detailed edits afterwards.

My style of teaching: I like to not only be a tutor for students, but a friend and constant resource. I am available to chat through Wyzant, online for remote sessions, or in-person tutoring. I will work around you or your child's schedule so when you need me, I'll be there.

Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I first honed my public speaking skills in high school while competing on the speech and debate team and participating in school plays. In college I was a tour guide, and gave tours to groups both small and large. I also sat on numerous panels, answering on-the-spot questions in front of groups of up to 500 people. As an adult, I give presentations on the college admissions process in front of hundreds of people. I make my presentations and speaking engagements fun and exciting, building upon lessons I learned during Stanford's Public Speaking course, in which I earned an A+. I have worked with students on overcoming their fears of public speaking, generating topic ideas and speech outlines for speaking assignments in class, and perfecting their speech patterns and eliminating filler words (um, uh, like, you know). I make lessons fun by including games and other cool activities tailored to the students interests.

Experience and Expertise!

Marcella provided timely and critical insight and recommendations for my daughter's college essays. Her help was most important in creating well worded, meaningful, and very thoughtful and empathetic essays. We've seen the work product of other tutors and we're glad we chose Marcella!

Awesome tutor

Marcella is a great tutor that really focuses on what the strengths of your application are and focuses your essay on that. She is an amazing tutor that will work with you even though she has a busy schedule, which is very important when you are trying to juggle multiple application deadlines. I would recommend her to any student looking for an essay editing or any admission consulting.

Intelligent, strategic, and creative college counselor

Marcella helped craft my student's college application essays to become polished pieces, retaining his own voice and style. She also has a great deal of knowledge and insight about the application process, strategic approaches for "selling" yourself (while retaining dignity and integrity!) to the college of your choice, and what colleges are seeking. An intelligent and gifted tutor!

Wonderful and great proof reading essays

She is so wonderful, accommodating and knowledgeable I am going to use her forever! I was really stressed out with my essay and after writing it she was spot on on my mistakes and how to improve the quality. Forever grateful!

Lifesaver in the college admissions process

I normally don't write reviews or work with tutors. But Marcella is an exception, as she has been my greatest resource through my college admissions process. She always brings out the best in my writing creatively and grammatically, especially when I have trouble transforming my vision/ideas into writing. Whenever I have side questions (when we're not meeting) regarding my essays or the college admissions process in general, she takes the time to provide exceptional advice. I always look forward to working with her, and I recommend her to anyone who is going through the same process as me!
