Hello! I'm a trained elementary and ESL teacher with experience in middle school math and science. I come from a family of fourteen teachers, so it's the family business. I love teaching and helping students grow in confidence and ability. I tend to use an active style with students (rote repetition puts everyone to sleep,) and am always looking for new ways to help that one student master that one thing. In public schools, I have taught pre-K through seventh grade. As an ESL/EFL teacher, I have taught from preschool to university to senior citizen classes in America and China. Drawing on my personal experience, my professional training, time spent abroad, and lessons learned from classroom time, I hope to help you achieve.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I passed CBEST in 2006 as part of the legal requirements to become a credentialed teacher in the state of California. This means I was able to perform well in language arts, math, science, and some physical education and human development topics. I found the test to be at about middle school math level, which I taught at the seventh grade level.
I hold a multiple subject credential from the state of California.
I have taught ESL/EFL since college including 3 years in Asia. As a credentialed teacher in America, I have taught students from pre-K to graduate school level, focusing on reading, listening, and speaking skills. As an ESL teacher, I have taught "business English," as well as helped students with accent reduction/problematic phonemes, grammar and syntax, and idiomatic English.
I am a trained elementary school teacher from the state of California, meaning I passed CBEST, all three parts of CSET, as well as the intense RICA test. I also have experience with curricula that emphasize phonics.
I have taught more than 300 students from diverse language backgrounds to speak in front of small groups and large audiences. The styles ranged from comedic to a serious discussion of weighty matters in expository and impromptu forms. I have also given lectures courses to groups larger than 100 students.
My master's degree focused on Augustine's use of time on his "Confessions" to prove/disprove religious arguments and their temporal implications. I am familiar with the "Patristics," focusing on Augustine and his close contemporaries, as well as some of the ties to modern philosophical arguments, as well as the "Neoplatonists." Using my knowledge of early philosophical thought (and more importantly, the politico-religious importance that went with them,) I have helped students identify and grapple with thorny theological issues and create links to the rhetoric/borrowed ideas of today.
I majored in Russian, focusing on 19th/20th literature (Lermentov, Turgenev, and the Maria movement) as well as post-Soviet politics. Using knowledge from graduate courses in the subject, I performed cultural and political analysis on the post-Soviet republics for the US government.
As an inner city school teacher, a lot of my life was spent helping students getting organized for success. Simply writing down assignments and not missing deadlines go a long way. The ability to effectively use knowledge of text structure helps students to review/comprehend weighty material in a short period of time.
