About Liz

Your success is my goal. I work with you to expand on the strengths you already have and bridge any gaps we identify. I prefer to work with the books and materials you use in school so you can immediately apply the skills we build together. I do not give you the answers but rather show you how to become self-sufficient and an independent learner. I’ll teach you highly-effective study skills, best practices and how to develop a solid study program. You’ll learn how to plan ahead so you can feel confident and relaxed on the day of the test.

I have a Master’s Degree in Engineering and have been a tutor for more than 20 years. I have taught many students at Middle School, High School and College level, including my daughter who has a PhD in Neuroscience and an MBA, both from Stanford.

My subjects include Math and Science, which many students find overwhelming and therefore dislike. I have helped students successfully prepare for all parts of the ACT and SAT exams. Because I work with computers every day, I can help you master Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. We’ll review the basics and also best practices, short cuts as well as tips and tricks. I can teach you Desktop Publishing and Presentation skills.

If you are willing to make the effort I can help you be very successful. The students that succeed are the ones that are willing to make the effort.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have taught Algebra 1 for many years to students preparing for tests, special exams or regular homework help. I enjoy tutoring Algebra especially seeing students understand and master the topics we work on together.

Chemistry

I have taught Chemistry for many years to High School and College students preparing for tests, special exams or regular homework help. I enjoy tutoring Chemistry, especially seeing students master the topics we work on together. As with many subjects, Chemistry can be a difficult subject to master when you struggle with the basics. Once we identify the missing links a whole new world of understanding opens up.

Desktop Publishing

My background includes 16 years of desktop publishing experience. I worked for Enterprise-size companies and produced their Marketing collateral, books, and manuals. I am familiar with Adobe InDesign and FrameMaker, Microsoft Publisher, Word and PowerPoint. I understand how to setup documents so they look professional and read well. I can teach how to publish and distribute documents electronically as well as send them to copy shops or printer vendors to get printed and published.

Microsoft Excel

I have 18 years of experience working with MS Excel in business settings as well as for personal use. I am familiar with many of the advanced features such as working with functions, sorting and filtering data, adding drop-down lists, charts, and Pivot tables. I have taught beginners, intermediate and advanced students.

Microsoft Outlook

I have 18 years of experience working with MS Outlook. I am familiar with many of the advanced features such as setting up and managing folders and archives, tasks, reminders, alerts, boiler-plate text, and rules. I followed a best practices course that supported me in using my time more efficiently.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have 18 years of experience working with MS PowerPoint in business settings as well as for personal use. I am familiar with many of the advanced features such as transitions, animation, smart art, charts using data, templates for slides, handouts, and notes. I have taught beginners, intermediate and advanced students.

Microsoft Word

I have 18 years of experience working with MS Word in business settings as well as for personal use. I am familiar with many of the advanced features such as page setup and layout, headers and footers, track changes, using templates and references. I have taught beginners, intermediate and advanced students.

Prealgebra

I have taught Prealgebra for many years to students preparing for tests, special exams or regular homework help. I enjoy tutoring Algebra especially seeing students understand and master the topics we work on together.

Study Skills

My professional background is project management and operations management. Both require attention to detail, seeing the bigger picture, organization, planning, and communication. I have been a tutor for many years and have used this expertise in helping students plan ahead, develop and apply consistent study habits. Often students fail because they are overwhelmed, do not know how to organize their time, plan ahead, or just need someone to help them bridge the knowledge gap. I teach students how to find answers, be self-sufficient and know when to ask for help.

Great tutor

Liz clearly loves Math and is really helping our Grandson. The school say the work he is doing with her is immaculate. She has also helped him with his organization skills. We are very grateful.
