I have bachelor's and master's degrees with concentrations in Art History and English, and a doctorate in Philosophy (2012) from Montclair State University, New Jersey. I have English Certification in New Jersey and California. Having taught English and Art History in several countries, and Pedagogy in Teacher Education Programs on both coasts, I also taught long-term at a learning center in Los Angeles. I am a professional, career educator.

As a proponent of P4C Pre-college Philosophy (Sharp and Lipman), for which I have published and presented research papers at conferences, I am committed to critical, creative, and caring thinking. Dialogue between tutor and pupil serves as the bridge between teaching and learning. Therefore, maintaining high standards for dialogue is key to a successful tutorial. My students learn to express themselves better --giving good reasons and making better judgments-- when faced with a moral dilemma; they take an ethical stance. Students grow in reasonableness and self- confidence.

Previously Hong Kong-based, I prepared international students from Hong Kong make successful academic transitions to US (e.g. Westover School, CT) and UK (e.g. Wells Cathedral School, Somerset) independent secondary schools, and subsequently US (e.g. Barnard College, Columbia University, NY) and UK (e.g. University College London and Imperial College, London) universities.

During a period of residence in Hong Kong, I was a professional art consultant. Having just completed a closed lecture series for a private organization in Beverly Hills, I also teach Art History.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

Preparing for the ACT English, you will sense a marked improvement in your test taking skills. I teach you targeted test taking strategies so that you approach test items with knowing recognition. You will develop thinking skills and gain the knowledge required for producing the best answer. In responding to prompts, you will be organized, persuasive, and thorough.

Art History

I attended graduate school at a foreign university for a Master's in Art History, which has been both an academic subject I have taught, as well as, an area where I have had practical work experience as an art consultant (Hong Kong). I taught the undergraduate introductory art history course at a private university. I also taught the art history course at a high school for the arts. Additionally, I have been a journalist covering private collections and conservation.

English

As an English tutor, I ensure that you develop ease and fluency in using English as a language in which to convey and exchange ideas through speaking, reading, listening and writing.

Students, who are speakers of other languages appreciate the scaffolding I provide, such as parallel texts, film, and multimedia, that promotes better understanding of the text and elevates dialogue.

Through focused practice, your ability to communicate in English will be reinforced. You will be responding appropriately and adequately whenever you are in situations that require you to project confidence. You will be able to engage in conversations on current and important topics of the day. The presentations you construct will highlight your own technical expertise prominently. You will write letters for targeted purposes and draw up effective resumes.

Whether your desired outcome is career enhancement or better academic performance, you will receive instruction from me to improve your short and long form writing skills, outlining, drafting, editing, including correct grammar, and accurate spelling.

Your lessons will be individualized and customized to meet your objectives.

ESL/ESOL

The many years I taught English to speakers of other languages in the Philippines, Hong Kong, New Jersey, and Los Angeles are the collective teaching experience I bring to bear whenever I teach English as a second language, as a skill for writing, reading, thinking, listening, and speaking. You will be involved in many instances practicing comprehension and higher order thinking, organizing your thoughts in order to put them down in writing, and defending your position as an active participant in discussions.

Government & Politics

I taught government and politics at the New Jersey Governor's School for Public Issues, Monmouth University. I will teach you how to keep abreast of issues both local and international and when called upon, maintain a definitive stance in relation to them.

Grammar

Among the many qualities success is built on, effective use of language remains the one that is most coveted. Your communication skills are an indication of your capabilities, and grammar above all contributes to your overall presentation as an educated and accomplished individual worthy of trust. Poor grammar--like incorrect spelling--can be an unwelcome distraction. It is one thing to be able to call another person's attention in a positive way, but it is much more important to maintain it, and for you to be held in high esteem. As my student, you will learn to communicate in written and oral form, using impeccable and correct grammar. I will help you learn the relevant knowledge and skills in English usage. I guarantee, you will gain exceptional mastery of English.

Literature

My degrees in English, concentrating on literature and writing, are invested in the lessons you will receive about literary genres, forms, features, authors and poets, literary terms, analysis, and criticism. These lessons double as writing tutorials because you are a learner who writes, in response to the reading material at hand.

You, as the student, will learn how to support your claims and how to cite evidence from the text, whether it be from American Literature, African-American Literature, British Literature, Shakespeare, Contemporary Literature, Young Adult and Children's Literature, and World Literature. The outcome is that you will be writing very much better narratives, research projects, persuasive and argumentative essays.

As the student, you will also learn how to unpack poetry, what a classic is, literary terms (e.g. bildungsroman and roman à clef), figurative language (e.g. metaphor, personification, hyperbole), the works of specific authors and poets, how to talk about books, and publishing jargon (e.g.editor, royalty, blurb).

Last but not least, students will receive all manner of constructive criticism: encouragement moving them to excel, what is good in their work, when their writing isn't clear, and specific directions on how to do better.

Music Theory

You will obtain and strengthen knowledge in music theory, including fundamentals, terminology, and analysis. We will address specifics of your assignment in theory and practice.

Philosophy

I am a philosopher by doctoral training. My principal concern is the three C's of ethical content: common, central, and contestable. My own thinking has been informed by Spinoza for ethics of the emotions, Dewey for pragmatism in dialogic inquiry, and Nussbaum for contemporary philosophical concerns. I teach philosophical inquiry, which covers logic, argumentation, and rhetoric, both oral and written. I have coached successful debate teams.
