I have a master's in English Education, Art History, and a doctorate in Pedagogy and Philosophy from Montclair State University, New Jersey. I am, additionally, a credentialed English teacher in New Jersey and California.

As a proponent of P4C Philosophy (Sharp and Lipman), for which I have published and presented research papers at conferences, I am committed to critical, creative, and caring thinking. Dialogue between tutor and pupil serves as the bridge between teaching and learning. Therefore, maintaining high standards for dialogue is key to a successful tutorial. My students learn to express themselves better --giving good reasons and making better judgements-- when faced with a moral dilemma; unsurprisingly, they take an ethical stance. This approach makes students grow inevitably in reasonableness and self- confidence.

For International Students, I offer lessons in Study Skills (i.e. time management, reading, note-taking, active participation, and study groups), English (i.e. listening comprehension, fluency development, oral intelligibility, reading, grammar, vocabulary development, and expository writing). Previously Hong Kong-based, I prepared international students from Hong Kong make successful academic transitions to US (e.g. Westover School, CT) and UK (e.g. WCS, Somerset) independent secondary schools, and US (e.g. Columbia University, NYC) and UK (e.g. UCL, ICST, London) universities.

The IEP is a guide to addressing your child's special needs. As a professional educator, I adhere to its recommendations in appropriately structured and thoughtful ways.

As a professional teacher educator, I can offer the novice, guidance in navigating the teaching-learning landscape.

During a period of residence in Hong Kong, I was a professional art consultant. Today, as part of this unique service, I prepare annotated visual portfolios and essays for informational purposes.

I am results-oriented and deliver positive outcomes. Under pressure? Get in touch with me!

We use Wyzant's Online Tutoring Tool for remote instruction.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

The many years I taught English to speakers of other languages in Hong Kong, New Jersey, and Los Angeles are the collective teaching experience I bring to bear whenever I teach English as a second language, as a skill for writing, reading, thinking, listening, and speaking. You will be involved in many instances practicing comprehension and higher order thinking, organizing your thoughts in order to put them down in writing, and defending your position as an active participant in discussions. Students who are speakers of other languages appreciate the scaffolding I provide, such as parallel texts, film, and multimedia, that promotes better understanding of the text and elevates dialogue.

Government & Politics

I taught government and politics at the New Jersey Governor's School for Public Issues, Monmouth University. I will teach you how to keep abreast of issues both local and international and when called upon, maintain a definitive stance in relation to them.

Grammar

Among the many qualities success is built on, effective use of language remains the one that is most coveted. Your communication skills are an indication of your capabilities, and grammar above all contributes to your overall presentation as an educated and accomplished individual worthy of trust. Poor grammar--like incorrect spelling--can be an unwelcome distraction. It is one thing to be able to call another person's attention in a positive way, but it is much more important to maintain it, and for you to be held in high esteem. As my student, you will learn to communicate in written and oral form, using impeccable and correct grammar. I will help you learn the relevant knowledge and skills in English usage. I guarantee, you will gain exceptional mastery of English.

Homeschool

I have New Jersey and California (current) State Teacher Certification.

Literature

My degrees in English, concentrating on literature and writing, are invested in the lessons you will receive about literary genres, forms, features, authors and poets, literary terms, analysis, and criticism. These lessons double as writing tutorials because you are a learner who writes, in response to the reading material at hand.

You, as the student, will learn how to support your claims and how to cite evidence from the text, whether it be from American Literature, African-American Literature, British Literature, Shakespeare, Contemporary Literature, Young Adult and Children's Literature, and World Literature. The outcome is that you will be writing very much better narratives, research projects, persuasive and argumentative essays.

As the student, you will also learn how to unpack poetry, what a classic is, literary terms (e.g. bildungsroman and roman à clef), figurative language (e.g. metaphor, personification, hyperbole), the works of specific authors and poets, how to talk about books, and publishing jargon (e.g.editor, royalty, blurb).

Last but not least, students will receive all manner of constructive criticism: encouragement moving them to excel, what is good in their work, when their writing isn't clear, and specific directions on how to do better.

Macintosh

I have taught students the operation of Microsoft and Macintosh platforms. I was trained to teach teachers on the instructional applications of Apple Macintosh, by Dr. Rich Wolfson, and The Mac Bible author Sharon Zardetto, at Montclair State University.

In my teaching, the focus is thematic analyses and personal meaning.

Music Theory

You will obtain and strengthen knowledge in music theory, including fundamentals, terminology, and analysis. We will address specifics of your assignment in theory and practice.

I am a philosopher by doctoral training. My principal concern is the three C's of ethical content: common, central, and contestable. My own thinking has been informed by Spinoza for ethics of the emotions, Dewey for pragmatism in dialogic inquiry, and Nussbaum for contemporary philosophical concerns. I teach philosophical inquiry, which covers logic, argumentation, and rhetoric, both oral and written. I have coached successful debate teams.

I passed the PRAXIS test for English teachers and have successfully prepared teachers for the test in order to obtain their teaching credential.
