About David

I’m a chemist with a B.S. in chemistry and industrial laboratory experience performing organic synthesis, purification and characterization on a multi kilogram scale. I have published research and I have been tutoring on and off privately for years with excellent results. In college I was part of a team that produced educational chemistry software for non science majors and I have also participated as a significant volunteer for a non-profit science education 501(c)3.

As a tutor, my primary focus is to provide support for high school and undergraduate level chemistry courses and test preparation. Once we have set goals, I work to express and convey the material through practical applications, models, analogies and personal experience. Lessons are tailored, in an effort to make the material accessible to both chemistry majors, and those students with a non-science trajectory. General course support includes general chemistry (HS, AP and undergraduate level), inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, spectroscopic methods and instrumentation, lab report writing, physical chemistry* and related subjects.

*For undergraduate level physical chemistry I recommend students form a study group as early in the semester as possible (or before) as it is my experience that group work on problem sets greatly speeds up and improves comprehension and exam performance.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

I have 11 years of synthesis and materials engineering experience and nearly as much experience tutoring.

Organic Chemistry

I have a chemistry degree, published research and several years of industry experience in the lab. My previous industrial experience involved daily benchtop organic synthesis, purification and characterization techniques on a multi-kilogram scale. I performed a wide variety of organic reactions which could be described as a survey of "Vogel's Practical Guide to Organic Chemistry" and modifications to procedures found in the journal, "Organic Syntheses".
