Struggle No More! One on One Is At the Door!
Hi! My name is Terri and I was a teacher in the classroom for many years! I started as Special Education teacher teaching K-3 graders in a public school and did this for 4 years. It was very satisfying to help students who needed that extra support to be successful. I then taught 1st grade for 2 years and loved the little ones! Hi! My name is Terri and I was a teacher in the classroom for many years! I started as Special Education teacher teaching K-3 graders in a public school and did this for 4 years. It was very satisfying to help students who needed that extra support to be successful. I then taught 1st grade for 2 years and loved the little ones! After moving out of the area, I decided to open my own preschool called Just For Kids and found preschoolers so adorable. I was lucky enough to do this out of my home for 2 years and my own daughter was one of my students. Then we moved to the foothills of the Sierras where I taught Kindergarten, 1st and a K/1 combination at another public school and I was lucky enough to have all 3 of my own kids attend the same grammar school where I taught. I was a very lucky mom. After moving back to the place I grew up, I started working for a private school at the 5th-8th grade science teacher and had the opportunity to do this for 4 years. While teaching science, I also enjoyed working with the 5th and 6th grade students in small math groups. Then I moved to a 2nd grade position and really enjoyed this age group for 6 years. After leaving the private school I decided to privately teach students one on one as a tutor. For the past 9 school years, I have had many, many students whom I have helped be successful in school which has been incredibly rewarding. Teaching and working with students for the past 37 years has been rewarding beyond words.
Why do I love tutoring after all of these years of being in the classroom? I love the one on one and the ability to spend serious quality time with a student with no distractions or interruptions and really getting to know how each student learns best. When you are in a classroom, there are so many levels of learners and it is sometimes difficult to meet the needs of each and every one of them. As a tutor, I can really focus on each of the learning styles and help each student learn to be the best learner they can possibly be. I teach organization, neatness, the importance of sequencing information especially in math, showing work on paper, teaching your brain how not to work so hard by learning "tricks of the trade" and strategies and building the confidence in each student so that he/she will believe in themselves and eventually may even like a subject again. Math is my main strength and I have had the pleasure of being able to turn students around from hating math to tolerating it and actually learning math as opposed to feeling like failures. Typically when you are not good at something, you dislike it. My goal is to get a student to a point where that student becomes better at it and in turn ends up somewhat liking the subject. These are some of my reasons why I enjoy being a tutor for those needing extra support.
I understand the importance of organization, neatness, showing your work, and the willingness to show step by step the process in which an answer is achieved. Mental math has its purpose and can be used at times but if you can't prove or justify your answer by showing the work, who is to know how that answer came about? I instill a discipline which I call the secretarial work so the student can then perform and get to an answer without having to work harder than is necessary. Chaos on paper rarely serves a purpose for any student but will most often cause stress and anxiety when trying to get to an answer. By eliminating a lot of these issues, math can actually be better understood and maybe on some level enjoyed.
I have always be a strong math mind and I am comfortable with elementary math through high school geometry and some of Algebra 2. Math has changed and advanced over the years, especially with Common Core, but I have had the opportunity to work with several students over the past 4 years with this new direction in math. I look forward to finding out more about your needs and helping you learn how to help yourself through one on one time. Give me a shout out and let's see if we make a good team.
