Tufts University (English, French)
Hi, I'm Jared! I graduated from Tufts University with majors in English and French and a minor in philosophy. At Tufts, I tutored through a program called Tufts Literacy Corps, and I held several teaching assistant positions. I plan to begin my career as a teacher in the fall by spending the academic year teaching English in Toulouse, France. I'm an aspiring musician and poet, and I love watching movies, reading books, telling jokes, playing soccer, and having philosophical conversations.
I love tutoring and teaching because I feel as though I am passing along a gift that I have received from my own teachers. I believe that the capacity to think deeply about language and meaning is part of what makes life so beautiful, and I would not be able to engage in this mode of thought without all of the teachers who have guided my philosophical journey. Now, I find myself in the position not only of the student but also of the teacher. I am thrilled to be able to give to others what I have received, and I am sure that my students will eventually pass along the gift of education in their turn.
I have been speaking French for ten years. In college, I spent a semester in Aix-en-Provence, France, where I became a fluent speaker and received the Etienne Gros Prize for Academic Excellence in Literature. French literature is one of my favorite subjects, and I have been deeply dedicated to my French literary pursuits inside and outside of class. Due to my efforts, I was awarded the Constantine Ghikas Prize in Romance Languages by Tufts University.
English has been my primary academic focus since my freshman year of high school. Even then, I knew I would be an English major, and I was taking steps towards becoming an English teacher. I have held teaching assistant positions in four eighth-grade English classes and one twelfth-grade humanities class, and my specialty as a tutor has always been the English language arts. I have a comprehensive knowledge of grammar, persuasive writing, literary studies, and creative writing. All of these skills played a role in my culminating achievement, my senior honors thesis titled "Body, Authenticity, Choice: David Foster Wallace's Oblivion as an Illustration of Phenomenology and Ordinary Language Philosophy," which received highest honors from the Tufts Department of English. I also took a graduate-level course called Practices of Teaching English, where I honed my abilities as an educator of the English language arts.
Please send me an email to schedule lessons or to find out more about me. I look forward to working together! Hi, I'm Jared! I graduated from Tufts University with majors in English and French and a minor in philosophy. At Tufts, I tutored through a program called Tufts Literacy
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
