After receiving my BA in Creative Writing I worked for four years as a teaching assistant in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Apart from helping the teacher with the the core curriculum, I was responsible for tutoring small groups of English Language Learners (Ells) whose parents were recent immigrants. I saw firsthand how difficult it is to teach a class of students with different levels of readiness and different learning styles. As a tutor I found that working one-on-one or in small groups these issues were quickly identified.
Later, I earned a certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language and spent three years in Mexico working with children and adults both as a teacher and private tutor, while learning Spanish at the same time. My tutoring abilities have benefited from my teaching experience.
What may set me apart from other tutors is that I did not start on the academic path until I was in my thirties. I raised a son, adopted a family of three older siblings, and did not receive my BA until I was in my 50's. Above and beyond my academic skills, I have great patience with students who find themselves struggling to acquire and assimilate new information.
My job as a tutor is to be supportive of both student and teacher, and, to work with the student in developing the skills and habits that will aid in the comprehension of any future material be it textbook or literature.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My Experience with Dyslexia
I adopted a nine year old boy who had been in and out of foster care for nine years and had gone to as many schools. At the age of 11 he was diagnosed as being dyslexic. After a year in a special ed class which did nothing for his dyslexia and only served to isolate him from the mainstream, we decided to seek help from a speech therapist who used the Davis Correcting Dyslexia Method. The technique involved the therapist working with my son for about six hours a day for one week. Additionally, we received suggestions for homework to reinforce the gains my son had made.
The theory behind the David Method is as complex as one would expect but the practical application is not difficult and uses the child's imagination in resolving letter confusion by creating a clay alphabet of upper and lower case letters to achieve alphabet mastery. What follows are creating words and oftentimes figures and scenarios to illustrate words that are not easy to visualize such as: to, for, and the.
I have a BA in creative writing, nine units of early childhood education, and a certificate in teaching English as a second language. I spent three years in Mexico teaching children and adults how to speak and read English. In the children's classes, speaking English always came first and then after a small vocabulary had been acquired we used this method to help teach the English alphabet -- adults were always resistant to this type of tactile learning.
Also, as a teaching assistant in the Los Angeles Unified School District I was able to observe in both kindergarten and first grade classes the application of this method by teachers who found it helpful. Of course the older child who is expected to read at a higher level benefits from understanding a bit more about syllables and how long words can be broken down into manageable units. And, even though there has been a diagnosis of dyslexia, it's important for the tutor to know how students feel about themselves. Both student and tutor need to be active participants in the process of learning by whatever method.
My son accepted his abilities and discovered that there were other ways of learning and that he wasn't so different from anyone else. He became fascinated by graffiti and was chosen to make posters for special events and even created his own special alphabet. Many theories about dyslexia abound, some seem to contradict each other. My experience with the Davis method was positive, and, I believe that I can use some of these methods to augment whatever material is covered in the classroom.

My educational background and work experience have given me the necessary skills to evaluate where a student might need help, keeping in mind the student's self evaluation as well as the teacher's perspective. And beyond that -- the student's learning style.
