I am an enthusiastic, patient teacher with excellent skills in approaching pedagogy from different angles. Using the theory of multiple intelligences, I allow students to explore their individual strengths (language, art, numbers, etc.)) to resolve problems or issues and find solutions. I firmly believe that this provides students with increased self esteem and the confidence to move forward. In my own education history, I was always more successful when allowed to apply my creativity and personal knowledge to a subject when faced with a question. I feel that teachers should provide guidance, not answers, and allow students to make mistakes in order to enhance learning and make it that much more rewarding.
I hold a multiple subject and single subject (social studies) teaching credential and have been working with students of all ages for several years. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taken and passed (the first time) both the GED in High School and the CBEST when applying for my teaching credential. I have also taken several CSET exams and passed, so I am quite familiar with the format of those tests and utilizing basic test skills - answer the questions you know first.
I completed one year of a cosmetology program in Los Angeles. The first year concentrated on basic (hair) grooming and simple setting techniques, then moved onto nails and skin care. I used a mannequin head to practice at home. I also attended and completed a 6 week course in make up for television and movie production. Our "final" was to bring in a model and picture of a painting, and transform the model into the face of the painting.
I have a multiple subject teaching credential which covers the basic education requirements for students in grades K-6. I have also worked as a co teacher and a substitute in elementary level classrooms. I am familiar with the Open Court literacy program and have run after school homework clubs.
Before becoming a teacher I worked as a Production Coordinator, then as an Assistant Director (AD), in the production of television commercials. I worked as an AD on a feature film. I taught a summer school program in short film production at Crossroads School. I guided students in how to prep, crew and cast a film.
I have worked as a literacy tutor in the elementary grades. I have passed the RICA test. I am familiar with and have utilized the Open Court literacy/reading materials for various grade levels elementary through middle school.
I run a business where I write up and present seminars to the public. I have been teaching dog training classes to the public for many years. Working as a teacher presents the opportunity to work on public speaking skills everyday, whether in the classroom or presenting new ideas to a group of colleagues.
