About Andrea

Howdy! I am a PhD candidate in Communication at Texas A&M University. I completed both my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Communication Studies. I have taught a variety of Communication Studies courses for the past ten years, including Public Speaking, Argumentation and Debate, Group Communication, Rhetorical Criticism, American Oratory, Persuasion, Strategic Communication Case Studies, and Presentational Speaking in the Organization. I also coached debate for two years.

I strongly believe that education is the key to accomplishing both your personal and professional goals in life, and that successful communication skills will only make you more successful in achieving those goals. As a former community college instructor, I am familiar with meeting the needs of diverse students; as a university instructor, I am accustomed to helping students meet the challenges that a rigorous education presents. I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I am qualified to tutor English as a top subject both as a coach for non-native English speakers and for students taking composition and writing classes. I have worked as a conversational English tutor for international students on a freelance basis for the last four years. I have taken graduate level courses in English composition and teach rhetoric, public speaking, and strategic communication to undergraduates.

Grammar

I am a doctoral candidate in Communication and Rhetoric. I have taught multiple writing-intensive classes and have had my work published in academic journals. As part of my doctoral degree I have participated in POWER writing seminars and other forms of professional development to improve my writing craft. I proficient in Strunk & White's -Elements of Style-. I prefer to teach grammar through a combination of reviewing rules of grammar, analyzing examples, and creating one's own writing.

Microsoft Word

I use MIcrosoft Word extensively as a PhD candidate. In addition to writing manuscripts in this program, I have also created flyers, table of contents, curriculum vita, and pamphlets, to name a few things. When I worked as a temp during my Masters degree program, I took the advanced Microsoft Word test, which I passed with a score of 93/100.

Proofreading

As an academic, I perform proofreading as part of my daily life. Whether in emails, manuscripts, syllabi, student work, or classroom presentations, I have become expert at catching improper grammar, spelling, and punctuation. I have both published manuscripts and serve as an ad hoc reviewer for the academic journal, -Argumentation & Advocacy-, qualifying me to list proofreading as a top subject.

Public Speaking

As an undergraduate at Cal Poly, SLO, I participated in intercollegiate policy debate. This experience inspired me to pursue a teaching career in Communication Studies. Upon graduating with a BA in Communication Studies, I completed a Master's degree in Communication Studies at CSU Sacramento with emphases in Mediated communication and Instructional communication.
While working on my Master's degree, I coached debate, assisted with public speaking courses, and taught argumentation at CSU Sacramento. After completing my coursework, I took a position as a Speech Communications instructor at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, CA. I taught there for three semesters before deciding to relocate to Laurel, MS.
While at Cuesta College, I received excellent reviews both from my peers and my students. I believe that learning should be an interactive process that draws upon real life experiences in order to make learning memorable and useful. I am more than happy to provide samples of my curriculum and evaluations upon request.

Religion

I completed a minor in religious studies during my undergraduate degree. At the graduate level, I have taken classes such as Communication & Religion, Digital Religion, and Sociology of Religion. Finally, I have published my academic work involving religion in journals such as the -Journal of Communication & Religion- and -Communication Inquiry.-

Vocabulary

I passed the GRE with a score in the 99th percentile in December 2011. Since that time, I have been in doctoral education, where my vocabulary has only continued to grow. I am familiar with etymology and have an extensive vocabulary, which is put to use in my academic writing.

I am a doctoral candidate in Communication and Rhetoric. I have taught multiple writing-intensive classes and have had my work published in academic journals. As part of my doctoral degree I have participated in POWER writing seminars and other forms of professional development to improve my writing craft.
