About Yunnis

I have taught at the primary level since March of 2010. After I graduated college, I started working as a substitute teacher for grades K-8 in the city of Chicago. In October of 2009 I was hired as a paraprofessional for a preschool student with cerebral palsy. I worked with the student in the afternoons when she was at school. During the day, I was asked to work with remedial students in grades K-5 and tutor them in areas of need. I officially began my teaching career as a first grade teacher at the same school. After a couple of years, I moved down to kindergarten as the students I was receiving in first grade were devastatingly below grade level.

From 2011 until 2014, I tutored multiple ESL students in both high school and college. The tutoring was done privately and I focused mainly on English grammar and writing for my students. I truly enjoyed this difference in environment as I was able to provide more individualized attention to these students. It gave me a greater sense of accomplishment to know that my students that I was tutoring were getting the help they needed in order to be successful.

I have over 7 years of teaching elementary mathematics and although it was never one of my strong subjects when I attended school, this gives me reason to work harder to help my students.

My love for literature drove me to take multiple classes in English as an undergrad. As a result, I have years of experience writing and editing papers. Currently, I am working on my dissertation proposal. This means I am writing and editing on a daily basis. Proofreading and helping students with their grammar is a joy of mine that my husband does not understand.

Teaching has allowed me to stay current with the changes taking place in education. I am knowledgeable in the Common Core standards as I have experience planning CC lessons as well as teaching CC lessons.

To reiterate, with many years of classroom teaching experience I have had opportunities to work with various learners. I also have had experience with students with special needs and have collaborated with special education teachers in order to modify lessons and make accommodations. I can say that I feel I am truly an expert in the field of elementary education and know what it will take to help a student succeed in all areas of learning.

As a tutor, I am here to help you with whatever you may need. I have experience student teaching in inner city schools, teaching near the west side of Chicago, and teaching in the prominent neighborhood of Lake Forest, CA. Aside from teaching I also have experience mentoring and tutoring students of all ages. If any questions arise, please feel free to contact me. I look forward to working towards your success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

When Common Core surfaced in Illinois, the school I was working at adopted the standards head-on. I was able to become familiar with the standards quickly this way. Within my years of teaching, I am most familiar with using Common Core standards for planning and executing lessons in all subject areas.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified elementary education teacher in both the state of IL and CA. I have passed all basic skills and content area exams for elementary education. I have over 7 years experience teaching in these grade levels.

Homeschool

The past school year I was an English teacher for transitional kindergarten and kindergarten students at an independent study program in Lake Forest, CA. The program followed a home-school model. I became familiar with the model in terms of student attendance, student portfolios, and logging grades through a management system.

Phonics

I have taught elementary phonics for over 7 years as a classroom teacher. I am proficient in assisting elementary education students with phonics whether they are struggling or need to be challenged. One of the resources I like to use for struggling students is, "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons."

Writing

Experience tutoring high school and college ESL students in areas of writing.
