Experienced Singapore Math Tutor
The first time I knew Greg, he had no motivation to learn Math at all. He didn’t bother listening to the lessons, let alone doing the practice questions. Ticked off by this situation, I made it my goal to have him behave. And if there was one thing about being an engineer, it taught me to find the root cause before trying to fix a problem. The journey of finding the reason for his behavior was not what I expected. I finally learned that he had no motivation to learn because he thought he was...
I finally learned that he had no motivation to learn because he thought he was stupid. And why did he have that kind of idea? It’s simply because he couldn’t follow the method taught in school. The funny thing was, I found exactly the opposite, that he was NOT stupid nor slow nor any other degrading names. So why did this mix-up happen?
Before answering that question, let me ask you this.
How do you learn math?
If you’re Greg, this is how he learns. He watches his teacher solve a problem on the blackboard and then diligently trying to copy her technique to solve other problems on the worksheet. And that’s probably the way many of us learn math. Nothing wrong with that, except when the teacher insists there is only one way or one best way to solve a math problem. As it turns out, there are many ways to solve a given problem, which is how I taught Greg. I introduced more techniques and allowed him to explore which method worked best for him. The result? Not only this approach enabled him to solve math problems he couldn’t have solved before, it also gave him a boost of confidence and ultimately stopped calling himself names.
I had the pleasure of knowing and successfully helped many Gregs in my years of teaching. And I owe it to my dad who guided me to find multiple strategies to solve math problems when I was still a student myself. Another lesson came from the time I spent tutoring math for secondary and high school students in Singapore for 3+ years. Singapore Math taught me to teach mastery by means of visualization and concrete concept. Singapore Math together with my dad's principle are essentially the two building blocks that equipped me to help my students.
So, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Let’s find out if I can help you too :)

Wonderful math tutor
We're so happy we found Lia. We had heard good things about Singapore Math and looked for someone who could teach our 5th grader how to solve math problems in different ways and apply math concepts to real life. After just a few sessions, she does her homework faster and pays more attention during math class. Previously, she would read books during math lessons because she didn't understand and felt bored. Now, with a better grasp of what is being taught, she is more engaged and positive about math. Lia is patient and breaks things down in ways that she understands. She explains the "why" behind the "how" really well, and we can't recommend her enough.Amy, 7 lessons with Lia
Caring advanced math tutor who loves house shows
Lia was a wonderful help to my daughter who was struggling with Advanced Algebra / Trig Honors. Lia determined that most of her struggles were with confidence during test taking. In addition to teaching my daughter the subject matter, Lia also helped plan out the best test re-take strategy and schedule a map to success before end of term finals. My daughter went from failing to a solid C in ~6 weeks. My daughter felt a connection with Lia as soon as they bonded over their shared love of house repair shows! As a parent, I was kept informed and felt that Lia genuinely cared about my daughter's well being and success in math. I highly recommend Lia!Erica, 14 lessons with Lia
