About Chrysanna

I have been teaching part-time at various art establishments and small businesses for over six years, including Lord of the Light Studio and Gallery in Almaden, Made Sewing Studio in Seattle, and Camp Fashionista in San Jose. I have mainly taught students at the elementary and middle school level, in both classes and one-on-one. I currently tutor sewing, fashion design, and drawing, and have taught all forms of traditional fine art media in the past, including acrylic, oil, and watercolor painting, pencil and charcoal drawing, soft and oil pastels, and ceramic and Sculpey clay sculpture.

I enjoy using my knowledge of technical art methods and theory to help students express themselves, become familiar with the tools of the trade, and improve their technique. I believe that anyone can be an artist with the right supplies, some guidance, and the time and freedom to let their creativity run wild. Tutoring style will depend on the skill level and desired skill sets.

I earned a degree in Art from Scripps College and studied abroad at the Studio Arts College International in Florence, Italy. I have completed coursework in many related subjects, including drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, digital art, sewing and fashion design, and art theory. My work has won awards and been featured in various shows throughout the past few years, including a first place award from University Art's Emerging Artist contest, participating in a group show at the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery in Claremont, CA, and The Lucia Suffel Crafts Award for 2016.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

I have taken over 9 years of drawing classes, both in school and at private institutions, and have taught drawing classes for over 5 years. There are many things to consider when drawing, depending on the subject matter, but when I teach I focus on the basics as they apply to all subjects: form, value, and line. As students advance, we introduce more specific aspects and techniques, such as shading, paying attention to negative space, drawing from observation, and building complex forms out of simple shapes.

Painting

I have taken over 8 years of painting classes, both in school and at private institutions, and have tutored painting on and off for 4 years. There are many things to consider when painting, depending on the subject matter, but when I teach I focus on the basics as they apply to all subjects: color, composition, and contrast. As students advance, we introduce more specific aspects and techniques, such as color theory, painting from observation, mixing and blending colors to shade, and the pros and cons of different types of paint (acrylic, oil, and watercolor).

Photography

I have taken classes in both film and digital photography, and have taught a digital photography summer camp course, which included shooting as well as editing photos with Adobe Photoshop software. For the shooting aspect of photos, we go over the importance of creating an interesting composition, balancing an image, and how to manually adjust focus, aperture size, and shutter speed for the best results. For post-processing, we go over color correction, cropping, and spot removal techniques.
