About Seda

Seda specializes in Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) and second language acquisition, with a focus on teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language (ESL/EFL) to speakers of other languages. She has designed, delivered, and evaluated instruction, by continuous use of educational technologies (both online and blended learning) as she has taught her diverse groups of learners for 16 years. She enjoys working with nontraditional groups of ESL students, those that are diverse populations with various educational, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds. During her academic studies both in the past and currently (i.e., her doctoral work), she has been involved in extensive scholarly work pertinent to CALL as an instructor, researcher, and a practitioner. With an extensive international ESL teaching experience and practice with various educational technologies, combined with her previous and upcoming scholarly publications in her field, Seda has so far presented at regional, national, and international conferences that have involved the incorporation of technology into curriculum, particularly in ESL learning environments. One of the recent presentations she delivered was for a diverse audience attending the Foreign Language Education and Technology (FLEAT VI) conference held at Harvard University in August, 2015. Other conferences Seda presented at were the International Educational Technology Conference (IETC) 2016, and Language in Focus (LIF) 2016 Conference. Before moving to CA approximately two years ago, Seda taught at the Intensive English Program (IEP) of Rice University in Houston, TX, following her previous employment at Harvard University's Division of Continuing Education (DCE) Computer Facility as IT/Tech support to faculty and students. She currently serves as a reviewer on IGI Global, an internationally renowned publishing company, as well as on the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Online Learning Research (JOLR), an international peer-reviewed publication of the Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education (AACE). Seda is an active member of the International Association for Language Learning Technology (IALLT). Other memberships include Computer Assisted Language Instruction Consortium (CALICO) and California Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (CATESOL) organization. Also, she is currently the editor of a forthcoming publication in the field of technology-assisted ESL learning and development.

Seda earned her Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certificate in Boston, MA, from Action in English (AIE) at the Olin Center Teacher Training Program. She also holds an international diploma in Business Administration at University of California at Berkeley, University Extension--she was awarded with distinction upon program completion. She additionally earned a certificate on successful completion of the English WIDE World online program developed at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE), with specialization in Differentiating Instruction: Strategies for Teaching English Language Learners. Her other academic degrees include a BA in English Language & Literature at Istanbul University, an MEd in Educational Management & Control at Yeditepe University, and an ALM in Educational Technologies at Harvard University. She has currently been working on the completion of her doctoral studies in Educational Leadership with Specialization in Educational Technology at School of Advanced Studies (SAS) of University of Phoenix. Her dissertation topic is an exploration of adult ESL students' lived experiences with mobile learning technologies in their language learning and development processes. Among Seda's passions are teaching ESL/EFL with digital technologies and sharing her expertise in this field with non-traditional, diverse undergraduate and/or graduate learners (rather adult learners or older adolescents), in addition to reading literary and philosophical texts, writing, watching movies, and taking long walks in nature.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have vast domestic and international experience and expertise in the field (for 16 years now). I differentiate my ESL instruction with constant use of web 2.0 digital technologies. Also, my teaching philosophy is based on a highly personalized approach to student learning. It is completely student-centered rather than teacher-focused. I love creating authentic learning resources, thereby, tailoring my instruction only towards the learning needs of my students. I would like to note that, with tremendous respect, empathy, and appreciation for my students' diverse cultures, languages, various educational and professional backgrounds, personal interests, as well as their current and future academic goals, I truly enjoy working with diverse, nontraditional groups of ESL learners from across the world.
