About Ben

During a late, Spring morning on the De Anza Community College, I distinctly remember walking across a nondescript tan building with a flyer posted on a bulletin nailed to its wall: ESL Tutors wanted!

For some reason, I don’t remember why, I assumed it was a volunteer position, and at that time I thought, “Why not? It sounds like a fun experience.”

Little did I know that opening the door to that nondescript tan building and speaking with the supervisor would culminate in a change of major (from Psychology to English), with a focus on teaching for the rest of my life. Plus, the position was paid!

Within six months, I found myself shadowing instructors in their classrooms, working with a pool of 10 students, and leading Listening and Speaking workshops. Within a few years, I was an English major at San Jose State University and working as a Writing Specialist, assisting students pursuing their Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, and leading writing workshops for up to 50 students at a time.

I really love to teach: both because of what it requires of me and how it allows me to interact with other people.

What it requires of me
Adequate teaching requires sufficient knowledge of the student.
Adequate teaching requires sufficient knowledge of the subject being taught.
Adequate teaching requires vision.

Putting these three things in the context of lesson planning, teaching, and then observing improvement, is really really fun for me and the students I work with. Sometimes it is a challenge, but it is a challenge that I embrace!

What will you get from me?
By working with me, you will have a hard-working, fun, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable teacher. I like to think I balance an honest, blunt attitude with an approachable demeanor. I’m not afraid to correct my students, and I also keep the atmosphere light and relaxed. Efficiency + entertainment = helpful lessons you can look forward to!

Here are concrete illustrations of how these qualities manifest themselves:

Hard-work
Every student receives a shared google.doc, where I prepare ahead of time for lessons, insert material, and create summaries. This means you have a convenient, online resource -- indefinitely!

Fun
Learning English doesn’t just have to be relegated to dry, grammar books. I enjoy going through humorous, farce news articles with my students, where they improve their humor iq while expanding their vocabulary and familiarity with the nuances of the English language.

Enthusiastic
I genuinely love meeting with and helping my students. This means you will never feel like a burden or an annoyance. You will always feel appreciated and comfortable enough in making mistakes that you can practice without hesitancy.

Knowledge
I have been studying the nuances of English language now for eight years. If there is something you need to know, I will be able to convey it to you accurately and memorably. You will never hear me say, that’s wrong just because.
How do I know which preposition to use for addresses as opposed to cities? What’s the difference between the past perfect and simple past tense? How do I express questions related to non-count nouns, and is a run-on sentence really a sentence that just keeps going on? (Nope!) I can answer these questions. In other words, I know my stuff!

Contact
I offer free 15 minute online meetings for potential clients who would like to gauge the experience of working with me.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Great Tutor!

I need to get a job and he provides great help focusing on concrete skills, like interview skills, cover letter and so on. Ben is able to highly customize my lesson plans. He is also very flexible when it comes to scheduling and location. He has much experience to teach students. I am poor at listening English but he tries to kindly explain me again and again until I understand.
