Hello! If you are a student browsing this website, I am sure you are in the middle of academic pursuit – which from my experience is one of the more fulfilling pursuits in life. My name is Hariharan V. (or simply “Hari”: sounds like “Hurry”). I work as a hardware/system design engineer in the storage industry and I am based in Silicon Valley. I have tutored undergrad students in Math/Physics & English during graduate school across 3 semesters and I found that I was quite comfortable at articulating technical concepts and helping students understand them better. I have also spent the last two years being a ToastMaster to hone my ability to communicate effectively whether it be to a single person or a group of people. In terms of my approach to tutoring, I would encourage qualitative understanding of fundamental concepts as the first target. Once that is established (through a combination of reading theory from the student and technical input/explanations from my side), I would then proceed to focus on examples to re-inforce the theory above. Following that, depending on the subject (especially if its Physics) I'd take the student through some assisted problem solving. Once the student gains sufficient confidence, I'd establish a study-plan - a certain number of problems to solve and a more nuanced approach to specific exams/tests depending on the grade or syllabus. In summary, the flow would be: Conceptual Understanding > Theoretical Examples > Assisted Problem Solving > More Practice Problems > Test taking (followed by feedback/discussions as needed) <> My undergraduate coursework (Electrical/Electronics Engineering) and graduate school (Electrical Engineering/Circuits/VLSI design) exposed me to a variety of math, physics and engineering course work – all of which have honed my analytical ability. They also have endowed me with a solid grasp of a variety of fundamental maths and physics concepts. I am confident in my ability to work with a student and develop a plan based on his/her needs and targets. The concepts that I retain with me today were obtained through several years of solid effort dating back to high school and continuing through higher education. I believe practice and being organized and having a good study plan are great habits to have for a student seeking to improve. Wish you well in your pursuit of academic betterment!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have had different roles around English over the years:
-Editor of the outreach magazine of my undergrad school
-Master of ceremonies at college events
-Practice Public speaking currently
-Solid GRE/TOEFL preparation prior to grad school
-Writing/English tutor for undergrad students during grad school
