About Mary

Hi!

Thank you for taking a look at my profile. My name is Mary and I am eager to help with your tutoring needs!

About me: I received my B.A. in Psychology from Duke University and earned my teaching license through the Teach for America program. During my time as an undergraduate, I tutored elementary students in math and reading. As a Teach for America Corps Member, I taught math, reading, writing, phonics, and social studies to students with special needs in grades K-8. It was through these experiences that I discovered my love of teaching and my passion for helping students experience academic success.

After Teach for America, I moved to the New York area where I worked as a Middle School Math Learning Specialist at a college-preparatory charter school. I then worked as a teacher trainer and curriculum developer for an education technology company that makes online math learning games. As a teacher and tutor, I have worked with students in grades K-8 with diverse learning needs including ADHD, Dyslexia, ASD, and students whose academics been impacted by a chronic medical condition.

As an educator, I learned that even in classrooms with the most appealing student to teacher ratios, it's rare to find the one-on-one support and enrichment that every student needs. I love tutoring because it provides me with an opportunity to work closely with students and their families. My goal is to build students' confidence and investment in learning. I accomplish this by building strong relationships with my students, identifying their learning strengths and areas of need, and working with them to set goals, track their progress, and master the skills they need to achieve academic success.

In addition to having experience with a wide variety of research-based math teaching methodologies, I am trained in the Wilson Reading System and the Sonday System for reading, writing, and spelling instruction. I also have experience finding and integrating different educational technologies to enhance student learning. My tutoring approach is very student-centered and hands-on, introducing concepts with concrete examples and experiences then moving to more abstract ideas. I love finding resources and strategies that are just right to meet my students' needs and will always work with each student individually to identify the best possible teaching techniques to match his/her unique learning profile.

If this sounds like a good fit for you, please do not hesitate to reach out. I am happy to answer any questions or provide any additional information you may need.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Autism

I provide district-funded home instruction to two students with ASD. With one student, I use Rapid Prompting Method with a letter board 8 hours/week to teach writing, math, science, and social studies. I work with another student 6 hours/week on math, science, and language arts. For both students, I track progress, write reports, and attend IEP meetings.

Common Core

I am certified as an elementary educator and as a special education generalist. I developed and taught 3rd and 4th grade Common Core math curriculums as a Math Learning Specialist at TEAM Academy. I also worked as the curriculum developer for an education technology startup company, developing Common Core-aligned math games for elementary school students.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have an elementary education teaching certification and have had a Special Education Generalist teaching certificate in Colorado. I taught students in grades K-8 for two years and developed math learning technology for students in grades K-6. This involved going into elementary classrooms to model technology-enhanced lessons and coaching teachers.

Phonics

I taught phonics for 4 years as a Special Education Teacher. I am trained in the Wilson Reading System and the Sonday System.
