"Learning is not attained by chance, it must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence." --Abigail Adams
The quote above summarizes my belief about learning, and thus, tutoring. As a tutor, my goal is provide my students with the attention and diligence that will engage them in the learning process efficiently and help them succeed academically.
I tutor students in French, Hindi and Academic English Writing, as well as students that are planning to take the TOEFL exam. Currently, I am a student in the Master's program in French Language and Literature at San Jose State University (SJSU), where I will be teaching a French course in the Fall 2014 semester. I am also a Peer Educator with the Peer Connections program as SJSU.
As a tutor and peer educator at SJSU, I have been trained to work with students to encourage approaches that encourage self-efficacy in learning and academic success. Since each student has a unique learning style, I am keenly attentive to students' individual needs and use tools that enable them to increase their efficiency in learning. Thus, I tutor content by employing strategies that cater to individual preferences in order to maximize learning, retention and opportunity for long-term academic success. My students continue to show tremendous improvement in their scores and grades as a consequence of the learning process that they are introduced to, since it helps them recognize and work with their strengths.
My tutoring process also involves regular assessment and feedback of students. Additionally, I collect feedback from students on the tutoring sessions: a practice that empowers them and makes them more engaged in their process of learning.
I am flexible in terms of cancellation and rescheduling of tutoring sessions. I encourage students to meet me in downtown San Jose, where I can reserve space for tutoring. However, I am willing to travel to another location if that is more convenient for the student.
My passion lies in working with students, and I find my work extremely rewarding. I really look forward to working with you, and to assisting you in achieving the academic success you desire! You can really tell immediately how dedicated Avina is to teaching and helping people learn. She is very easy to learn from and seems to have a strong respect for and devotion to her language, and that really helped me learn it as she made it so enjoyable. I definitely recommend her to anyone who wants to learn at exactly the pace they want to, as she is very flexible and accommodating in that regard. Also, she is very patient and careful to make sure her students are learning. Awesome!
Avina was my Hindi tutor for multiple sessions. She not only knew the language inside out but really help me grasp the basics and some intermediate level vocabulary. I would highly recommend her. She is able, patient, and a hard worker. Thank you for your help during our meetings - it has made me a better learner.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
In addition to being a Master's student of French Literature at San Jose State University (SJSU), I have been selected to teach French for the Fall 2014 and Spring 2015 semesters at SJSU. I am a trained peer educator, and have tutored many students in French. I also taught a 6 week Spoken French course at SJSU in Summer '13.
I have studied Hindi for 14 years and am also a native speaker of Hindi. I have also tutored my peers in high school and my mastery of the language is reflected in my school transcripts. I have read major works in Hindi and am well-versed with its grammar and syntax. Since I have used Hindi extensively all my life, I feel well equipped to tutor the language.
As a Master's student of Language and Literature at SJSU, proofreading is an essential element of my work. It is one of the most critical steps of professional writing and calls for great attention to detail and immense focus. I have proofread numerous documents and papers in my capacity as a graduate research coordinator. I am really thorough and provide a lot of feedback for the client since I value the process tremendously.
I am a trained peer educator at San Jose State University in San Jose, CA. I have conducted several workshops and seminars for undergraduate students on campus, including topics like Study Skills and Public Speaking & Communications Skills. For me, reading is the foundation of learning. It is the building block upon which rest all other skills that an individual needs to become a successful citizen of our dynamic society.
As a reading tutor, I work with students to help them explore their preferences in reading, and use material that they most enjoy reading. This adds fun to the process, which to me is an integral part of reading. I hope I get a chance to introduce you to the marvels of reading and the benefits it brings with it.
As a trained peer educator at San Jose State University, I have conducted numerous workshops on study skills, ranging from reading skills and note-taking to study patterns and learning styles. I think that good study skills can be developed primarily through self-awareness combined with the knowledge and use of tools that enhance the student's learning.
I am a Master's student in Language and Literature at San Jose State University (SJSU), and writing forms the core of my work. I have recently written a book chapter to be published in a Social Psychology book.
Language and working with students are my two passions in life. I am a trained peer educator at San Jose State University, and have worked extensively with students on their academic writing. My approach is to treat writing as a step-by-step process while focusing on its mechanics and technicalities. For children, one of my most important goals is to motivate them internally so they enjoy the process of learning and see it as a rewarding one.
Please see below, some of the feedback from my students at SJSU:
"My coach gave me lots of feedback for grammar and sentence structure, which is necessary to make my essay clear."
"She helped me realize what I needed to improve; when we were going over it, instead of just telling me, she made me figure out what I needed to fix."
