About Gregory

I have a life-long passion for learning. As a straight-A honors student throughout high school, an International Baccalaureate diploma recipient, an exchange student at Oxford University, and an honors graduate from Amherst College, I have a proven track record as an effective learner.

But my greater passion is helping others to succeed in their own learning pursuits. While in high school I tutored ESL students weekly at the local public library in various subjects. In college I was a Big Brother and served as a mentor and tutor to elementary-aged kids through that organization. I have served as a teacher and tutor in many different contexts since then, including youth groups and senior-citizen groups.

I am currently on the faculty of a small, humanities-based private school in San Jose, where I serve as the English teacher for grades six through eight.

I am available and willing to tutor in most subjects, though I specialize in writing, literature, history/social studies (I was a history major in college), and primary and intermediate math. I enjoy working with students of all ages and backgrounds, including gifted children.

As a tutor and teacher my priority is to help students think and understand. As I see it, it's not enough simply to know the right answers. It is far more crucial to know how to get the right answer, and why it's the right answer. That has been the secret to my own success as a student, and that is at the center of my educational philosophy. I focus on explanation, on thinking through concepts and ideas, on talking through problems in understandable language in order to arrive at solutions.

It would be my pleasure to help you or your student. Don't hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have worked on staff at two churches; in each of which I regularly taught both formally and informally on matters related to Bible study and theology, in Sunday-school courses, from the pulpit, and in small groups. Additionally, I am an MDiv student and have passed my biblical-content-competency exams, in both Old Testament and New Testament, at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. I am in the process of seeking ordination in the Anglican Church in North America.

College Counseling

I understand the current higher-education landscape very well and am skilled at matching students with colleges and universities that are "good fits" for them. I am an Amherst College graduate who has also studied at Harvard and Oxford. I got into college as a first-generation college student and know how difficult navigating the admissions process can be, and also how to succeed in it. In college I was a Big Brother and served as a mentor and tutor. I have served as a teacher and tutor in many different contexts since then, including youth group and senior-citizen groups

Greek

I have completed (with all As) the biblical Greek sequence at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, with additional training in Classical Greek at Amherst College. I have also taken three Greek exegesis (reading and interpretation) courses at a graduate level and was offered a job as a Greek tutor by the New Testament faculty at Trinity.

Religion

I completed a BA with an emphasis on Western religious history, and I am currently a Master of Divinity student.

Social Studies

I have a B.A. in history (cum laude) from Amherst College. I previously studied in the History Faculty in the University of Oxford. As an IB diplomate, I studied American and European history as my Higher-Level subjects and took AP exams in each (scoring 5 in both cases).

Study Skills

I have helped organize study groups as an IB and AP student (in subjects ranging from biology to chemistry to literature to philosophy to history), as a liberal-arts student at Amherst College, and as a graduate student in theology and Greek at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. Additionally, I was an independent registered English and history student for two terms in the University of Oxford. I have been a successful student and have successfully helped others in study groups and as a formal tutor to pupils ranging from elementary-school students to ESL doctoral students.
