I am interested in tutoring elementary school aged children. I started working as a child care specialist at the age of 12. I have been a Nanny for three years for three girls, and I have taught for over 12 years. With a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential, I now know several strategies to help students struggling with concepts in Reading, Math, and Science. I specialize in Math: Pre Algebra, Algebra, English, Grammar, Science and Reading. I taught Kindergarten for five years, fifth grade for four years, second grade for one year, third grade for one year and first grade for one year. I have 12 years of experience lesson planning and devising innovative ideas to teach phonics, grammar, science, and math. Working one on one with a child is a wonderful opportunity to focus and delve deeper into what a child's challenges and strengths are.
I am respectful and patient and recognize the power of clear communication in order to learn. I have been told by the principals that I have an excellent rapport with children. My classroom is known for its calm and quiet atmosphere. I have high expectations, routines, and consistency. I am constantly inventing teaching strategies to surprise and motivate students to participate in the learning process. I help children reach his/her potential while developing a life-long love of learning. There is always room for growth; mistakes are opportunities to learn!
I am flexible with time. With a 24-hour cancellation policy, I do offer make-up classes.
A quiet well-lit place to study is extremely important. I have room at my home, and I am also willing to travel to another location.

Sarah is very patient with my son. She meets him where he is at and helps build his confidence in reading and writing. He enjoys meeting with Sarah because she brings different techniques to make learning fun.
My daughters first session was great. Sarah was very patient and good with keeping my daughter's attention so she could focus on her work. My daughter was able to accomplish more homework in this one setting than ever before. Looking forward to next week! Thanks you Sarah!
Sarah is a Godsend! She is patient, and very good with our child. Our son enjoys his tutoring sessions and I know it's because of Sarah. She has a way with children. Our son is very shy-but Sarah was able to gain his trust very quickly and he is now eager to learn.
Our son is learning so much and we can already see improvements in his reading, after just one month of tutoring. We feel very blessed to have found Sarah-she's a perfect match for our son.
Thank you, Lynda, for your very kind words! I enjoy working with your son. He is so motivated to learn. He brings a smile to my face with his witty comments and insightful observations about reading and his high frequency words. He is a pleasure to teach!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a BA in Liberal Studies from Cal State, East Bay. I also have a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential, which I earned in 1997 from California State University, East Bay (Formerly known as Cal State Hayward). I have a concentration in early Childhood Studies. I have taught Kindergarten for four years, first grade for one, and fifth grade for three years.
I have taught Kindergarten for five years. I worked at a school which used the Carden Method. This is a step by step approach to learning how to read. It starts with the basic concepts of phonics, the sounds that letters make, and it progresses to rules of phonics and finally blends, two letters which say a specific sound. Furthermore, it discusses exceptions to the rule, like many of the sight words. I have a minor in Early Childhood Education. Currently I am tutoring a 4 year old, whom I am teaching to write his name and beginning reading/phonics, and I am tutoring a first grade who is struggling with phonics and learning his sight words.
I have been a student of yoga for over 15 years. I started by teaching myself Hatha yoga with Richard Hittleman's book, 28 Day Yoga Plan. Then I learned Iyengar yoga from an experienced (taught yoga for over 10 years) instructor at 101 Fitness gym. Currently I do yoga at home using podcasts, tapes, and from memory. I exercise daily and keep in shape. Yoga is and always will be part of my exercise routine. I have reference books regarding postures to ensure proper form.
