About Alan

I graduated from the University of California Berkeley and earned a B.A. in Applied Mathematics with a concentration in Quantum Mechanics and a French minor. I have taken and passed all math classes with A's. Courses include: Calculus I and II, Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Discrete Math, Real Analysis, Abstract Algebra, Numerical Analysis, Dynamical Systems, Mathematical Modeling, Fourier Analysis, Complex Analysis, Classical Physics, Electromagnetism, Modern Physics, and Quantum Mechanics I and II. I am currently pursuing my Masters in Applied Mathematics at San Jose State University. Courses include: Advanced Numerical Analysis, Advanced Complex Analysis, and Introduction to Mathematical General Relativity. Additionally, I am a Teaching Associate at SJSU responsible for lecturing two undergrad algebra courses and one undergrad calculus course.

I worked at a tutoring and learning center in Los Angeles for about a year where I tutored students ranging from elementary school to college. I am comfortable tutoring pre-algebra, algebra 1, geometry, algebra 2, precalculus, calculus 1/2/3, differential equations, and linear algebra. In addition, I have helped high school seniors pass the annual AP Calculus exam by creating a Calculus Review course.

As for French, I have been studying and speaking French for 8 years. I attended the University of Bordeaux for a study abroad opportunity where I was involved in a full immersion program and took mathematics courses in French. For two summers in a row I have done an internship at US Naval bases located in Corona, CA and in Dahlgren, Virginia. At each base I conducted research for the Navy in mathematical statistics, metrology, quantum information theory, and quantum computing

When tutoring, I aim to engage my students so that they understand each concept, how to approach problems, and solve them in the most efficient way. I want my students to realize the beauty of mathematics and how it really is a useful subject. I am open to teaching students of any age and work well with anyone determined to learn the subject. I hope to hear from you soon!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

I teach algebra courses at SJSU and have tutored algebra for over 5 years.

Calculus

I took Math 1A at Cal in Fall 2011 and passed with an A- and also received a 5 on the AP Calculus AB Exam. I also took Math 1B at Cal in Spring 2012 and passed with an A+.

Differential Equations

In spring 2013, I took a Linear Algebra and Differential Equations course at UC Berkeley, which I passed with an A grade. I have studied ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations, and lower and higher order differential equations. Although I have not tutored differential equations professionally, I often helped my peers with understanding the fundamentals of differential equations as well as the more complex problems and concepts.

French

Courses at Cal with grades:
French 3: Intermediate French: A
French 4: Intermediate-Advanced French: A-
French 102: Writing in French: A
French 121A: 17th Century French Theatre: A-
French 171A: The Court of Louis XIV: A
French 172A: Psychoanalysis Literature: A

I took two courses at the Université de Bordeaux in France. I also took four years of high school French. I'm considered fluent in French.

Linear Algebra

In spring 2013, I took a Linear Algebra and Differential Equations course at UC Berkeley, which I passed with an A grade. I have studied basic matrix operations, determinants, inverses, eigenvalues and eigenvectors (both real and complex), diagonalization, orthogonality, and symmetric matrices. Although I have not tutored linear algebra professionally, I often helped my peers with understanding the fundamentals of linear algebra as well as the more complex problems and concepts.

Precalculus

I have received As in pre calculus and have tutored pre calc for more than 3 years

Amazing!

Amazing tutor and overall guy! He imparted so much knowledge in one session! Was struggling to remember old concepts, but very quickly Alan helped me remember. Furthermore, he taught me new concepts in unison with the old. Super funny too! Kept learning lots of fun!
