San Jose State University (Physics BS)
Hello, my name is Michael Mulanix and I am a 23 year old physics masters student at SJSU. I have been a tutor my entire college career and have accumulated 200+ hours of experience with students in elementary school, high school, and college. In mathematics I am comfortable tutoring elementary algebra, linear algebra, geometry, trigonometry, vector analysis/calculus, single-variable and multi-variable calculus, and statistics. In physics I am comfortable tutoring statics, kinematics, dynamics, electricity & magnetism, thermodynamics, classical mechanics, statistical mechanics, quantum mechanics, and solid state physics. I am also a TA at SJSU, where I help teach the physics curriculum to non-physics majors, which gives me a great set of tools to draw upon when tutoring.
I like to make it clear that I am not a tutor who is going to guaranty to raise a grade, I believe that only the student can do that. Don't mistake this for apathy, I am a very passionate tutor who cares about my students success, but experience has taught me that no amount of tutoring can help a student who doesn't try hard. What I can guaranty though is that I will create a comfortable and stimulating learning environment where I try to both direct and coach the student, as well as challenge and perplex them, that way they develop confidence to solve problems on their own. This philosophy makes it harder on both me and the student, but I believe that the key to being successful in these challenging courses is to be confident and comfortable.
I try to keep my travel within downtown San Jose, but I am willing to travel up to 10 miles from the SJSU campus. My most successful students are the ones who use my services regularly, but sometimes a few sessions before a test is all a student needs if they are only a little behind. I prefer to have regular meeting times with my students, but I have flexibility to work around other peoples schedules. If you have any questions don't hesitate to contact me. Mike has tutored our 15 year old daughter in geometry three times thus far and she feels he does a good job explaining the material. She also says the time goes by fast and Mike is easy to focus with. Mike has also tutored our college age son, who just returned from 4 years in the military and needs to brush up his math skills. Mike can work with a variety of levels of math and students with different backgrounds, needs and goals.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
