About Hannah

I have recently graduated from Western Washington University with a Bachelor's degree in Japanese with a teaching endorsement and my TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) Certificate. I spent a year studying abroad in Nagoya, Japan, and I learned so much about the language and culture, and myself. My goal is to become a high school Japanese teacher after living in Japan for a few years either teaching English or otherwise. I am passionate about both subjects and about teaching. I have teaching experience with students in high schools and ESL programs in Washington, and completed my student teaching internship abroad in Hobart, Tasmania, where I planned and taught Japanese lessons to four 7th grade classes, two 8th grade classes, and one 9/10th grade combined class for a period of 11 weeks. I've also completed a 10-week TESOL practicum working with Japanese students studying English. Before that, I helped tutor students in Japan and India in English in a conversational context and planned and executed weekly ESL lessons with a group of three students. Overall, I am a very easy-going, amiable person. I enjoy teaching, and that makes a world of difference for both the tutor and the student. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

I am currently studying art at Western Washington University. I have taken drawing classes and have a portfolio of drawings available. Since I'm studying education as well, I have a good idea of how to teach techniques and other such aspects of art.

English

I have earned my TESOL Certificate at Western Washington University, including a 10-week teaching practicum where I worked with a class of Japanese students learning English.

I also have my Bachelor's degree in Japanese with a teaching endorsement. I have completed numerous practicum placements teaching Japanese language, including an intensive 11-week student teaching placement in Australia teaching Japanese to grades 7-10.

ESL/ESOL

I have earned my TESOL certificate from Western Washington University. Throughout the program, I completed multiple workshops and worked in classes with students from a variety of countries (including Saudi Arabia, South Korea, China, Japan, Mexico, and more) and at many different proficiency levels. My practicum was in a Japanese English class where I helped students to develop their English vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar through studying American history.

Japanese

I have recently graduated with a B.A. in Japanese from Western Washington University, and my goal is to become a high school Japanese teacher. I've been studying it for over 8 years now. I spent a year living and studying in Nagoya, Japan, and it was the best year of my life. I've really developed a deep passion for the language and culture of Japan, and I can't imagine my life without it!

Through my years of studying Japanese, I've been helping my peers understand grammar and study vocabulary, kanji, and whatever else they need through personal tutoring sessions. Because I have personally learned Japanese as a second language, I'm aware of the challenges it holds for English speakers and can explain concepts in a way that's easy to internalize. I've worked with many exchange students tutoring English as well, since I'm a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) minor, so I know a variety of learning strategies!

SAT Writing

I scored a 1910 overall on my SAT, with 100% on the essay section.

Track & Field

I ran track and field for all four years in high school. I went to state in my events all four years as well. Throughout my time on the team, I was helping other teammates with their form, starts, etc. I also worked with children one summer at a track and field workshop/camp.
