About Richard

I am a GREAT tutor and academic coach.

On the Graduate Record Exam ('GRE'), I earned a score on the 'Verbal' test of 770 out of a possible 800.

On the Scholastic Aptitude Test ('SAT'), my 'Verbal' score was 726.

I taught Special Education students in a street-tough elementary school, and was cited by the Chicago Board of Education for 'outstanding achievement' with these youngsters. In 19 weeks with me, this class advanced from 'no skills' to late second-grade reading level.

Among other tutoring and coaching work, I was General Director of the Orientation Program for incoming freshmen at Seattle University, and was appointed Pledge-Master for the service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega. I was co-founder of the 'Big Brothers' program in Seattle.

I served two years as a live-in Dormitory Moderator for campus-housed male students, helping them to maintain academic discipline and to succeed in their individual studies.

During grad school, I was elected Student Body President at New York University.

Since then, I have also tutored corporate executives in personal-computer skills and have taught email skills to seniors in both class settings and one-on-one.

My tutoring style is focused on building self-assurance and confidence within each person -- highlighting the achievements they have already made, showing an overview of where we are going, and helping them step across barriers -- while they develop self-recognized mastery of our material.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

As a high school senior, I won Bank of America's top award in Northern California for Fine Arts. My Fine Arts expertise was in Speech Arts.

At completion of my freshman year at Seattle University, our Student Body President appointed me General Chair of the Freshman Orientation Program for incoming students. This involved considerable public speaking, organization and leadership skills. As a junior, I was elected President of the University's Men Residents Association.

After Seattle, I went to New York University School of Law on a Root-Tilden scholarship. This achievement turned upon effective public speaking and leadership. In a contested public campaign at NYU, I won election as Student Body President. As part of this work, I taught to others the skills of public speaking and shared leadership.

Social Studies

I earned the High School semester grade of "A" in Civics, and in U.S. History, and in Social Studies.

I entered Seattle University on a Ford Foundation scholarship, and earned a B.A. degree in Political Science. As you know, this field is directly related to Social Studies. It was my academic major at Seattle.

In a nation-wide search, based on PUBLIC SERVICE "Commitment" and "Achievements" in college, the SCHOOL of LAW at NEW YORK UNIVERSITY named me a Root-Tilden Scholar; and I earned their Law Degree. There is no greater, nor direct, application of Social Studies than devotion to the Law in Public Service.

Lastly, a student can quickly recognize the following:

I APPLIED my High School "Social Studies" learning, when a campaign to RAISE TAXES asked our Student Council to contribute.

As a student body officer, I reminded our Student Council, and the audience, that it's improper to devote tax money (which EVERY taxpayer must pay) toward EITHER side on a vote to increase taxes! And so my reluctant Motion to Deny a contribution was approved.
