About Sid

UPDATE, September 6, 2015:

Dear Parents and Students,

It is never late to start preparing for standardized exams. I have helped students prepare for the ACT and SAT exam, high school and college statistics and Economics. I will work within your budget. Best way to contact me is through WyzAnt.

Academic Background:
Cupertino High School 2004 | De Anza Community College 2006 | BA, UC Berkeley 2008 | MA, University of San Francisco 2013.
Specialization: Standardized Aptitude Tests and Mathematics.

Below is my reflection from working with students.

ACT/SAT Math:
Problem: Fear. Students have a challenge solving difficult problems.
My Approach: I help students see patterns and grouping certain problems together. I adopt a step by step approach and resolve missing gaps in their study.
Problem: Time. Unable to complete the exams within the allotted time.
My Approach: I encourage students take smaller loads of questions at a time and more timed section tests and this brings endurance for full length tests.
Problem: Motivation.
My approach: Some students are motivated and some need to be motivated. By building a meaningful friendship and solving problems together with them is the best method to bring motivation.

Statistics/Econometrics/Economics:
Problem: Students complain of not following the instructor and tests are different from homework/quizzes.
My Approach: I build a sound foundation by thoroughly explaining concepts. Once the foundation is built, students can successfully defend themselves against problems of any kind and adapt to tests with more confidence.

Thanks,

Sid

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have helped a Senior take the ACT in 2013. James got a score worthy of a partial scholarship. We had one week to prepare. Despite these odds we accomplished our goal. We maintain a friendship to this day.

Algebra 1

I have helped one high school student succeed in the field of Algebra 1. The student and I worked together to prepare for a quiz. It was productive and useful.

American History

I successfully tutored a student in American history and government through study of the US Constitution.

Econometrics

I have taken undergraduate and graduate classes in Econometrics. I have learned how to use STATA and am familiar with Applied Econometrics, Financial Econometrics and regressions.

Elementary Math

I am currently tutoring six students in basic pre-Algebra concepts, basic Algebra and more advanced topics.

Many of my students have struggled with basic multiplication tables. I often use games to have kids attain lightening quick speeds with times tables.

I prefer having the student explain their thought process step by step on challenging problems. Learning by doing is one of the most effective means of retaining knowledge.

Prealgebra

I am currently tutoring six students ranging from 5th to 8th grade in basic pre-Algebra concepts, basic Algebra and more advanced topics relevant for elementary aged students.

Many of my students have struggled with basic multiplication tables. I often use games to have kids attain lightening quick speeds with times tables.

When going over problems that the student has struggled with, I always have them attempt the problem on the board while explaining their logic to me at each step. I believe they'll hold onto knowledge if they learn by doing.

Religion

I have attended USF, a Jesuit Catholic institution for higher learning. I have attended classes, which teach the Greek New Testament, hermeneutics and homiletics.

I have had the opportunity to extensively read the Old and the New Testament, give/receive bible instruction and am presently committed to learning the Hebraic Old Testament.

STATA

I have an undergraduate degree in Economics from UC Berkeley and a graduate degree in Economics from U of San Francisco. At these schools I have been exposed to the intricacies of STATA. I have learned how to perform normal regressions and advanced ones like Probit and Logit. Additionally, I have learned how to upload data from .csv sources and have cleaned data before running regressions.

Statistics

I have worked with two students in the field of statistics. One student was an overachieving high school student. The second was a college student needing a tune up in the field of statistics as it relates to economics.

Best Tutoring I've Ever Recieved! — Sid was one of the best tutors I've ever had. He was patient, polite and knowledgeable. I had tried at least three tutors before him, but it seemed none of them were the right fit. Sid was conveniently close to my home and offered some great assistance in studying for the SAT in a little over a week. His methods were carried on to the ACT, and I'm happy to say that I was completely confident takin ...
