About Zeina

I offer a very high-level of tutoring that is far more comprehensive than what most tutors offer. In addition to my English degree from U.C. Berkeley, I am also close to completing my master's degree in Psychology from Santa Clara University. Most tutors only address, what I call "content"--meaning the content in the textbook or the content the teacher covers in the classroom. What is severely lacking in the approach of most tutors and tutoring companies is a focus on the internal "process" of learning. Process refers to the mental process that goes on in a student's mind while they are writing an essay, taking a test, reading or doing homework. These are two equally important areas and most tutors, lacking an education in psychology, are not able to address the student's internal process. Process impacts many vital areas, such as motivation and concentration, which are a essential to a student's success. Without a focus on process or training in psychology, many tutors will help a student's grades go up, but they also create a dependency relationship; this unhealthy dynamic means that, if tutoring stops, the students grades will go down again. In contrast, my approach has the ultimate goal of independence and empowerment for all of my students, allowing them to learn the skills necessary to eventually no longer need tutoring! I teach transferable skills that are relevant, not only for any future class, but also for any professional career and life, in general.

In addition to my education in writing, reading, and psychology, I also went through a formal tutor training program. I specialize in students in elementary, junior high, and high school, but I also work with younger students, college students, and adults, as well. I have a lot of experience with students with ADD/ADHD, Autism, and learning disabilities. I particularly enjoy tailoring my teaching style to suit each unique individual. My motto is "Whatever it takes!" If it's humor that's needed, we'll use humor. If it's strict discipline and accountability for assignments that's needed, we'll do that. Everyone learns and thrives in different ways and for different reasons. My aim is to find what makes you or your child tick and expand on those strengths to help achieve your goals.

I have been incredibly privileged to have had a number of gifted teachers and tutors in my life, and I strive to give this same gift to others. I would be honored to help you or your child with any kind of academic need, along with related study skills, test-taking strategies, organization, motivation, and time management.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I am almost finished with a master's degree in psychology (2 classes left), and I have been working with students with ADD/ADHD for several years. I have a lot experience and great success in working with kids with ADHD, both medicated and unmedicated. I have done a fair amount of research on therapeutic and teaching methods that are effective for ADHD. I also created an educational pamphlet for parents of children with ADHD in one of my classes for my master's degree.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked with students of all ages and have more experience with students ages 9-12. I have tutored these students in all subjects and worked with children with learning disabilities, difficulties with focusing, and staying organized. I enjoy exploring each student's unique strengths and challenges to help them love learning.

I provide unique and customized ESL/ESOL one-on-one tutoring and group classes. Rather than teaching from a textbook, I provide multiple assessment tests to students and clients to gauge their level of English ability and their areas of greatest challenge. Based on the results of these oral and written tests, I create a custom curriculum that targets their specific challenges and goals around grammar, vocabulary, speaking, writing, reading, pronunciation, etc.

I have been trained by an advanced ESL teacher who has taught ESL for over thirty years. My specialty is being able to teach effective group classes to students who are at vastly different levels. This works particularly well for corporations who want to provide an ESL class, but either do not have enough employees to offer several different classes at different levels or want to first try a pilot class, before committing to classes at different levels.

Special Needs

I have an extensive amount of experience tutoring and working with students with special needs. I have almost completed my master's degree in Counseling Psychology through Santa Clara University. While I am very familiar with traditional approaches to students with special needs (i.e. the ABA approach for students with Autism), I also am constantly reading current research about the most recent evidence-based approaches. Traditional methods may work well for some students, but most students with special needs require a more individualized approach. I specialize in creating custom learning plans that evolve and change as the student grows. I use both the latest research, along with careful attention to each student, to constantly evaluate and refine these individualized learning plans, so that your student may thrive!

Study Skills

I am almost finished (2 classes left) with a master's degree in psychology. I have been tutoring study skills to a wide variety of students for over ten years, including students with learning challenges, such as ADHD or Dyslexia. Because of my background in psychology, I am able to effectively teach study skills to students with even the most significant cognitive or attention deficits--it is a significant part of my specialty.

Zeina is a real professional!!! — I can recommend Zeina for both private classes and groups. We experienced a lot of tutors but chose her. Zeina is a professional and the most knowledgeable person. She is a really great teacher, very strong and she knows what to do. She is very responsible for preparing for the lessons, she doesn't miss a single detail. Yes, she raises the bar quite high, but we'd prefer this teacher. ...
