I have over 12 years of experience as a classroom teacher in Algebra I and Geometry in a middle school setting. I have also taught Geometry at the high school level as well as SAT Prep Math and US History.
I have taught students from various socioeconomic and academic backgrounds and have found that the most important factors in student success are student desire to succeed and the teacher's time and ability to explain the subject matter in a way to facilitate student understanding. The full classrooms and full student schedules sometimes make understanding mathematics more difficult for some students. One on one with an interested and knowledgeable tutor can sometimes make the difference between success and failure.
I hold a BA in History with a minor in English and an MBA with a concentration in Qualitative Business Analysis along with CA teaching credentials for Mathematics, Social Studies and Language Arts.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught and tutored Algebra I at the middle school and high school levels for more than 14 years.
Algebra is the basic building block of all higher mathematics and an understanding of this subject is expedient to be able to move on. Sometimes Algebra can seem like a new language compared to previous math subjects. A calm rational approach and planned strategy can make all the difference.
I majored in History at university, with emphasis on 20th century US and World History. History is more than names and dates; it is the story of people and how they relate to their situations, how they solve their problems and how they make their dreams come true. If you don't know where you've been, how will you know where to go or when you get there?
These are the basic building blocks of mathematics. Sometimes the classroom can seem like someplace that's going much too fast when a focused, one on one, approach is all that's needed to make sense of everything.

Simply put, geometry is the study of the size, shape and position of 2 dimensional shapes and 3 dimensional figures. However, geometry is used daily by almost everyone. In geometry, one explores spatial sense and geometric reasoning. Geometry is found everywhere: in art, architecture, engineering, robotics, land surveys, astronomy, sculptures, space, nature, sports, machines, cars and much more.
When taking geometry, spatial reasoning and problem solving skills will be developed. Geometry is linked to many other topics in math, specifically measurement and is used daily by architects, engineers, architects, physicists and land surveyors just to name a few. In the early years of geometry the focus tends to be on shapes and solids, then moves to properties and relationships of shapes and solids and as abstract thinking progresses, geometry becomes much more about analysis and reasoning.
Prealgebra is that class that helps students with critical thinking and problem solving in an algebraic way. Multi-step problems and algebraic operations to ease the student from adding and subtracting into factoring and using exponents. I have taught and tutored prealgebra at the middle school level for over 10 years.
Reading comprehension is the basis for excellence in all other subjects of the curriculum. Being able to read and understand the text and other materials is a basic requirement for doing well in school and later in life.
The math section of the SAT is basically Algebra I and a simplified Geometry that can be realistically labeled "Algebra with pictures." The part many have difficulty with is reading the problems and pacing. I have experience with SAT prep and can help with the required reading comprehension and pacing skills required for this test.
I hold a BA in History and an MBA along with California teaching credentials in Mathematics, Social Studies and Language Arts. I have about 12 years teaching experience and close to 20 years experience tutoring students at all levels from 2 - 12 and across a broad range of socioeconomic backgrounds and abilities. I have also helped prepare students for the SAT and GMAT.
