About Andrew

My name is Andrew, and I was raised in Fresno. After graduating from Clovis West in 1990, I moved to Phoenix where I pursued a career at Motorola in clean rooms. Years later I moved to Illinois where it was too cold, so I moved back to Phoenix. After being laid off from Motorola, I had open heart surgery and moved back to California. With good health, I met my wife at IBM in San Jose and a year later had a beautiful daughter. I changed careers to medical administrative assistance and then to computer work as a network support technician. My certifications with computers are Comptia A+ and Comptia Network+. In high school I recieved a certificate and letter signed by Jerry Brown for High Honors Algebra.

I love math and am an excellent teacher. I've always wanted to take that career option, but I think that I prefer the one-on-one experience. I've taught a number of people algebra. I like to first see what you know. Then I teach, show, and teach again. I will NEVER do your work. For example, my brother-in-law spent 50 minutes with the whole class working on one question. They still had no idea how to work the problem. It took a few minutes of me coaching him to believe that the teacher had no idea what he was doing. After that, I had him doing that question and harder ones within 5 minutes. Then, when he went back to his book to do his assignment, he was able to complete the whole page saying, "That was easy!"

I completed calculus at Fresno City College with an "A." I have forgotten most of that, but I remember quickly. So, my strong points will be Algebra 2 and below. I also am very familiar with computers and programs associated with Microsoft Office. I look forward to meeting you and your child to help get those A's in class!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

When I was in high school, I took a State Honors Algebra 1 test. I passed with an A. I received a Certificate for High Honors in Algebra 1 and a signed letter from Bill Jones. I have taught numerous people and it's easy. Algebra 1 goes step by step and it builds up. Teachers show one way, I like many options to get the answers. Show it, teach it, show it again. I'll never give the answers, they learn how to check by going backwards!

General Computer

I am very computer literate since I have been using computers my whole life. Recently, I graduated from Institute of Technology with high honors and a certification in A+ and Network+. If someone is new to computers, I am comfortable with teaching all the basics to learn how to use word documents, print, check email, hook up camera's and other items they need to use to be comfortable. I can also teach simple troubleshooting so that one would know what to do and check in case something went wrong. I can teach Macintosh and any version of windows from 95 to Windows 7. Thank you!
