About Elizabeth

Hello everyone,

With long held passions for American History, English, and Political Science, I've worked as a Theater Teacher for 19 years with experience at Cal State LA, Cal Poly Pomona and USC. While serving as a tutor for students aged 5 years old to adults, my greatest strength is encouraging others to believe in their own innate abilities. As both a Mom , with 21 year old twin sons' with autism, and as a Director with a lifetime of experiences working in the Theater; I have developed a great deal of compassion for others. I like to break subjects down to manageable components, so that students can begin to understand completely their own personal process of learning.

Looking forward to working with you in the future!

Be Well,
Elizabeth H.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

Reading and English have always been my highest scored testing areas, and I take great pleasure in assisting others to reach their individual level of excellence.

ACT Math

I completely understand test anxiety especially when it comes to Math. A student can be a creative English, Social Studies or Arts person, and still have the patience and persistence to gain an understanding of something that doesn't come naturally. Don't be afraid! YOU CAN PASS THE TEST!

ACT Reading

Reading and English have always been my highest scored testing areas, and I take great pleasure in assisting others to reach their individual level of excellence.

American History

Understanding the twists and turns of our nation's founding through to it's present-day complexities is a fascinating journey. And that's exactly how I approached tutoring in this area.

ASVAB

I understand test anxiety, and I am especially strong in assisting those who need help with the English and Math sections.

Autism

In 1997, I heard the words that parents really don't want to hear from a pediatrician, "I think your child is autistic". Diagnosed with mild/moderate autism, my twins boys are now 17 and our family is enjoying life. My husband and I learned how to teach our children from listening to other parents, teachers, aides, workshop leaders and coaches; and I combine that knowledge with my own professional ability to teach, to help students with their academic studies.

Elementary Math

Going to school I always excelled at English and Reading, but Math scared me until my Nana and Papa taught me to enjoy it. With setting up my own lemonade stand, cooking, measuring wood to build things, and playing board games; people that I loved made math real to me. Now I like to use some of these same techniques in my teaching.

English

English, Grammar, Reading, Vocabulary (Words) - these are the loves of my life. This is how I approach all of these topics. All of the students that I tutor in these areas show significant improvement.

Grammar

English, Grammar, Reading, Vocabulary (Words)-these are the loves of my life. This is how I approach all of these topics.

Public Speaking

I enjoy coaching those entering the public speaking arena. I like to clarify and illuminate some key techniques to assist my clients in sharing their ideas in both informative and persuasive speeches. Through my experience teaching in the American Theatre for over twenty years I've helped many business, science, and others students from diverse backgrounds develop and improve their ability to speak and engage in public.

Reading

English, Grammar, Reading, Vocabulary (Words)-these are the loves of my life. This is how I approach all of these topics.

SAT Reading

Reading and English have always been my highest scored testing areas, and I take great pleasure in assisting others to reach their individual level of excellence.

SAT Writing

You can be a good writer, but still find test-taking in this area stressful. We will work to give you some tools to get through this roadblock while completing your exam.

Study Skills

As a former adjunct professor at the university level for 20 years, I've gained the knowledge of how to inspire and teach students to develop effective study skills for success with academics.

Theatre

Theatre has been a part of my life for many years, directing plays across the theatrical canon such as ROMEO AND JULIET, DEATH OF A SALESMAN, Brecht's ANTIGONE, and TO BE YOUNG, GIFTED AND BLACK. As an acting and writing coach, I enjoy bringing others' creativity to light.

Vocabulary

English, Grammar, Reading, Vocabulary (Words)-these are the loves of my life. This is how I approach all of these topics.

Writing

Writing is a combination of self-expression and organized thinking on paper. Helping each individual to find their own voice is my highest goal in this area.

Best Tutor — My son and daughter started their lesson with Elizabeth since February this year. In 2 months I saw significant improvement on their English speaking, math, and acting. Elizabeth found their problems and improved them. My kids both got very good feedback from their teachers on their report cards. I am so glad to find Elizabeth as our tutor and plan to use her long term as long as she willing to te ...
