Whether you are a recent immigrant seeking to pass the TOEFL or to strengthen your verbal and written English skills, or the frustrated parent of a child or teen who is not thriving academically, I can help! I have a BA in Classics and an MA and Ph.D. I have edited doctoral dissertations for several non-native English speakers. Most importantly, I have successfully tutored numerous students through Wyzant in a wide range of areas: I have coached Caltech post-doc and med school students prior to their interviews for jobs or residencies, taking them from tentative to confident conversationalists, and I have worked with dyslexic third graders, seventh graders with ADD and other learning challenges, and seniors in high school preparing for the SAT and in need of help with their college essays. I bring to the table a strong analytic mind, experience using proven strategies for breaking through learning barriers, a genuine enjoyment of people of all ages, and a commitment to seeing them succeed. Lisa is very helpful and gets the boys to do detailed work and put in more effort than I could accomplish!
Lisa has been tutoring our son in all middle school subjects. She always shows up on time and manages to accomplish most of the homework and test preparation. Lisa is very patient and always encouraging.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have studied the Bible extensively in its original languages in seminary studies, having completed a master's and a Ph.D. in theological studies (Fuller Theological Seminary). I have preached and taught the Bible in seminary and in congregational settings for over twenty years. I am well-versed in the historical settings, literary genres, and theological content of nearly every book of the Bible.
I have taught Communication courses at the graduate school level for five years. My courses teach a range of spoken communication, such as speeches designed to inform, persuade, inspire, and teach a difficult concept in simple terms. We incorporate the creative and effective use of visual aids and slideware, but the emphasis is on confidence, clarity, winsome connection with listeners, and effective use of illustrations and other supporting material. I have a Ph.D. in Preaching, and these skills transfer well to any public speaking environment.
I have tutored numerous students toward stronger scores on the English portion of the SAT. As a freelance editor, published author, and professor of graduate-level students, I am constantly working on improving my own and others' writing. My knowledge of Latin and Greek has helped me to develop an extensive vocabulary and given me the tools to build others' facility in learning and using words well.
I completed my Ph.D. with high honors in four years while parenting two children and working part-time, which I believe amply demonstrates my own ability to manage time, confidently master a subject, and produce quality work in that area. I currently teach at the graduate school level and encounter students from a wide variety of socioeconomic and educational backgrounds and cultures. Some students need motivation, some need help to approach and bread down a task into manageable pieces, and some need motivation and greater confidence. I approach every student with respect, patience, creativity, and strategies that are tailored to the capacities and deficits that they bring to the subject matter. While I have not formally taught children, I have spent countless hours coaching my own two children to academic success.
