Hello, I'm Jas! I studied Jazz Guitar Performance at USC, and Ethnomusicology from UCLA (I was a "straight A" student at both). During my time in school, my teachers made all the difference in my academic performance: they brought challenging subjects to life with their knowledge and passion for the material, and their deep and genuine commitment to the success of their students. Because of them, I became sincerely motivated to not just earn a good grade but to really absorb the knowledge their courses offered me in the hope that it would enrich my life as it did theirs. I was fortunate to have outstanding role models of what a great teacher should be: knowledgeable, organized, and an exceptional communicator capable of adapting to the needs of the students.

I have been involved with academic tutoring and other forms of individual instruction for many years. I started volunteering as a tutor during after school daycare as early as junior high, and have been involved in tutoring and mentoring ever since. I've been teaching guitar lessons for 20 years, taught meditation for 7, and began a personal coaching practice, focused primarily on personal time management and goal setting, in 2015. I have 5 years of professional academic tutoring experience. While I've taught all subjects to students ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade, I've focused primarily on English and related subjects with junior high and high school students.

English was always my favorite academic subject when I was a student. As child, I fell in love with the worlds that words could conjure in my head, and I quickly understood that new ideas, and new vistas of understanding, were often only a few pages away. Because of my love for the subject matter, I excelled in my coursework and read books outside of school that were often equally, and sometimes more challenging than what was assigned to me in school. In the years following my college graduation, I've worked as a professional content writer for five different companies, and have written

Composition (Music)

I first had my original compositions performed by a jazz combo when I was in high school. During college, while I was studying jazz guitar performance, I independently started writing classical music under the extracurricular guidance of one of my professors, focusing on string quartets. When I went back to school to finish a degree in Ethnomusicology, I took four different composition courses, which required me to write four finished pieces of music per week, and my program culminated in a senior recital of original music. Since April of 2020, I have written over two hours of original music, and have started a YouTube channel that explains concepts pertinent to composition and music theory.

General Music,

General Music

I have 28 years of experience as a guitarist, including 2.5 years at USC's Studio/Jazz Guitar Performance Department, and 2 years of study at UCLA's Department of Ethnomusicology. I have composed 4 hours of original music, spent my 20's playing in bands for which I was the principle songwriter, and have written music for student films, video games, and classical music ensembles. I also have 20 years of experience teaching music to private students.
Guitar,

Guitar

I started playing guitar 28 years ago, at the age of 10. In the following years, I always played in all available music ensembles, including the high school jazz band, which took me to stages across the United States and abroad. In college, I studied guitar performance and ethnomusicology, and have continued to perform, and compose original music, in the years following my formal education.
Songwriting,

Songwriting

I started writing songs in high school, and continued during college and afterwards. The majority of my 20's were spent performing original music in my own bands on the stages of clubs in Hollywood, and I continue to perform my original music in San Francisco today. I have also collaborated with numerous vocalists from other styles of music, co-writing material with them for their own projects, which are often in a very different style from my own. My experience has given me a broad range of understanding about the art of songcraft as it applies to many different genres of music.

Jas is very patient and polite.

How to hold the guitar properly, how to bend my fingers & palm, the chord names, how to tune using the tuner, listening how each 6 strings sounds, strumming freely letting the sound flows and placing right fingers playing the D major.
