About Mark

As an editor, mentor and tutor, I've helped writers find their voice while delivering clear and persuasive information to demanding audiences. As a journalist for two decades, I've written for publications from The New Yorker to The New York Times Magazine, Harper's, Wired, and many more, and have worked all over the world, from European capitals to war-torn African nations.

As a tutor, I use all of these experiences to guide young writers to discover their own unique viewpoint, place value on what they have to say, and understand how to represent themselves effectively on the page, whether in a composition assignment, a college application essay, or as a test-taking skill.

I've spent two decades writing for magazines and newspapers all over the world, doing everything from mainstream profiles, features, travel pieces, and book reviews, to highly specialized reports and financial market news for knowledgeable and demanding audiences. As an editor, I learned how to transmit these skills to young writers, and as a tutor, I seek to convey foundational skills while also helping the writer find the right way to develop their voice and discover and express the unique viewpoint they possess.

Writing clear and thoughtful pieces on deadline is part and parcel of the journalist's trade, and I've found that the skills I've developed in that context are exceedingly useful when applied to test-taking. Similarly, learning to express oneself clearly while also bringing forth the writer's voice is a valuable asset in college application essays.

Please get in touch if you're in need of an experienced writing tutor who brings deep real-world experience to bear, and who can help young writers find their voice while mastering the foundational skills of written expression.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
