About Smriti

Hi! My name is Smriti, and I just graduated with a B.S. & M.S. from Stanford University. Though I studied chemical engineering, my true passion is teaching & tutoring. I've tutored for over 8 years now, both informally and professionally. For the last 3 years, I've been tutoring Stanford undergraduates in any and all chemistry courses. I absolutely adore chemistry, I'm a total nerd about it. I can also tutor from middle school up to 1st-year-college level courses in biology, physics, and maths.

I think it's really important that we have a relationship of mutual respect and appreciation. I don't know everything, and my job isn't to lecture at you. I want us to work together to solve problems and learn concepts, and I can guide you and challenge you along the way. I want you to be comfortable asking me any and all questions, even the non-academic ones. I think being a tutor is so much more than just being a teacher - it's about being a mentor, one who can relate to their students from having been in their place so recently.

In my many years as a tutor, both informally and professionally, I've developed my abilities to guide students rather than lecture them, to allow them to solve problems rather than taking the pencil myself, to encourage a growth mindset when faced with the endless stream of "I'm just not good at chemistry", and to greatly value and develop the relationship between student and tutor, for the best possible learning experience - for both of us. My favourite thing about tutoring is that "Aha!" moment my students have, when they finally grasp the difficult concepts thrown at them in class. And I love that I also can have "oh wow!" moments when I suddenly look at a theory in a new way, because of our discussions.

From as early as middle school, my friends have turned to me because of my ability to distill complicated concepts into clear ideas. I have taken this ability with me throughout my tutoring experiences. I don't just want to explain though - I want to give students the tools they need to approach science problems, to think analytically and critically and yes, creatively as well. This is what makes me successful science tutor.

Please reach out to me if you're interested in meeting up for tutoring, whether it's just for a day or regular weekly sessions. Tutoring is my priority right now, and I'm free all afternoon and early evening for sessions. I look forward to talking with you more about your goals and schedules and lesson plans!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

I have a BS and an MS in chemical engineering from Stanford University.

Organic Chemistry

I studied chemical engineering at university for my undergraduate and masters' degrees. This means that I took at least a year of the following subjects: General chemistry; Physical Chemistry; Organic chemistry; and Biochemistry.

I also tutored organic chemistry at university for more than 4 years, and am still familiar with the content across many levels.
