About Earl

Math and science can be extremely technical, un-relatable subjects, but--trust me on this--it doesn't have to be this way. I'm a technical communications professional, which means I pair my deep technical expertise with a demonstrated skill for communicating that expertise to a wide range of audiences, and I've been doing it for over ten years! Over the years, I've helped students pass Stats 2 (Introduction to Statistics) at UC Berkeley, Urban Planning 220A/B (Quantitative Analysis in Urban Planning) at UCLA, GHS 207 (Biostatistics) at UCSF, and Math 124 (Elementary Statistics) at SFSU.

I studied mechanical engineering at UC Berkeley, where my ability to communicate dense technical subjects in a clear and accessible way meant that I was often the writer and presenter on group assignments. I volunteered with Project SMILE during my time at UC Berkeley, tutoring kids from a local middle school in math. After graduating, I continued teaching as a management consultant, listening to businesses describe their work processes, and helping them understand how information technology could make those processes work better, faster, stronger.

I was in an accelerated math and science program in high school, taking only honors/advanced placement courses, and excelling in all of them. I earned 5's (perfect score) on my Calculus AB/BC, Physics B, and Physics C Advanced Placement (AP) exams, and got perfect scores (800) on my Math and Physics SAT subject tests. I scored so high on my Chemistry final exam sophomore year that my teacher had to exclude my exam when calculating the “average” against which other students would be scored.

I believe that there is art, history, literature, philosophy—humanity—embedded in STEM. Let me help you find it! Let me help you appreciate the great irony of math and science: whereby reshaping our understanding of the universe has helped us to better understand ourselves.

Now enough bragging about my accomplishments. Let me know how I can help. :)

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Broke the biostatistics blood-brain barrier!

Earl is the 5th person I've sought help from this semester. I've learned a bit from each other person but still was left not fully understanding how to approach the problems. After my first session with Earl I finally feel like I may actually have a chance at mastering this class. He is a gifted communicator and translator of deeply complex statistical concepts such that I could begin to know h
