About Johanna

I was raised in El Salvador, Central America, and went to a French immersion school- that's why I've been speaking French, Spanish and English since I was 4 years old. After obtaining my French Baccalauréat (SES-mention AB), I lived in southern France for 5 years.

Although Spanish and English are my mother tongues, French comes just as naturally to me! I returned from France with a bachelor's degree in Environmental Education. Coming from a school that focuses primarily on holistic learning, I am equipped with teaching methods that enable me to adapt to each of my students and provide a fun, varied and influential teaching experience.

I have been tutoring children and adults for the past 3 years. It's two completely different experiences, but both are as gratifying. I love getting to know my students, molding our lessons towards what they need and what they want. Making our sessions as enjoyable and as effective as possible is what I aim for.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

French

Having started speaking French when I was three, it now feels almost like a mother tongue to me. I attended a "lycée français à l'étranger" (France's overseas national education system) from age three to eighteen and obtained my French baccalauréat with honors. I then moved to France, where I lived five years. I studied Environmental Education, followed by a master's in Agriculture.
I master the language from an academic standpoint, as well as from a colloquial one. And my experience in education allow me to adapt my lessons effectively to each student.

Needlework

As an Environmental Education major, I am used to teaching practical and tactile skills, in addition to theoretical knowledge. I learned knitting and crocheting as a teenager and have been perfecting my stitches since. I have a variety of needles and a wonderful book with over 200 patterns that is always a great support for teaching, even beginners! I have patiently and successfully taught friends, family and neighbors, both children and adults.

Social Studies

My master's degree was in international rural development, a field in which sociology and history have a profound place. I took sociology courses in high school (I graduated with honors from the French Baccalauréat focused on Economic and Social Sciences) as well as during my master's degree. During this time, I also took many classes regarding twentieth century history focused on its impact in our social structures today. Additionally I always like to stay on top of current political and social topics.

Spanish

I am a native Spanish speaker. I grew up in El Salvador, Central America. I have taught Spanish to beginners and intermediates. I lean strongly on participative learning and love to share elements of Spanish and Latin American culture.

Really understands different learning schedules

Johanna really tailored her approach to the way I learn and why I want to learn the language. She's also very flexible since my schedule doesn't allow for a lesson the same date and time every week or other week. My previous attempts to learn Spanish were very unsuccessful. I left my first lesson happy and hopeful that I will succeed this time!
