I graduated with an undergraduate degree in Physics from Cornell University and a PH.D. in Physics from Syracuse University. Following this I taught for two years at Drexel University in Philadelphia PA. I then had the opportunity to join the NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View California. At Ames I pursued a rich and rewarding research career spanning 40 years in planetary studies and Earth's atmosphere studies. I played a significant role in explaining the Antarctic Ozone hole in the late 1980's, and recently I was leading an interdisciplinary research group studying sea level rise at Ames.
I am versed and proficient in both classical and modern physics. I could also provide assistance in basic math through calculus. I retired from my NASA position in 2014. Since then, besides playing the cello, hiking and spending good time with my grandchildren, I have volunteered with the San Francisco Port Commission as part of a citizen team developing a new plan for the Port. The planning effort covers a span of 2 years 2016-17 and will result in recommendations to the Port on future development and resiliency and sustainability of the Port in the face of sea level rise and earthquake hazards.
I am an experienced teacher. I was an adjunct professor of physics at San Jose State University in 1981-82. At Ames Research Center I have mentored many undergraduate and post-doctoral students. I enjoy teaching and mentoring and supporting young students’ development. As a mentor I have been able to establish productive and mutually beneficial relationships which young students and scientists. I have enjoyed these experiences a great deal. I look forward to tutoring interested students.
I welcome contact from a student or a family seeking tutoring from an experienced scientist and teacher. We can explore mutual interests and meet if that is desirable. I live with my wife in Noe Valley, San Francisco and do not mind traveling to meet a student in a comfortable venue.
