About Levi

I am a chemist with a passion for teaching working in pharmaceutical development. I have extensive teaching experience, having been a lecturer at a community college, as well as a teaching assistant for 5 different chemistry courses (with a total of 15 semesters of teaching experience). I have tutored students in chemistry and organic chemistry at at least 10 different institutions, and had success with each and every on of them. I once helped a student with an F receive an A- on a final exam with only 3 weeks (5 sessions).

I absolutely love organic chemistry (I know, I'm crazy), and love seeing people suddenly get the concepts. I try to break it down into small, understandable steps, and try to emphasize the mechanisms of the reactions. Organic chemistry as a whole can be broken down into a few key reactions and interactions. I try to help the students have a firm strong grasp of these, so that the more complicated chemistry they learn later in the year will seem trivial since it is simply a recombination of concepts they already understand.

I have extensive experience as a scientist. I have been teaching and tutoring science courses for years, and have taken an extensive selection of courses. I love science, and have always had a natural skill with it. My years of taking courses in quantum mechanics, physical organic chemistry, biophysics, and other courses has allowed me to have a cohesive, "whole picture" understanding of most biological and analytical sciences.

I LOVE tutoring and teaching. While I enjoy my job in research, I don't feel 100% fulfilled unless I am also teaching. I would love to meet with any and all students having trouble in chemistry or other natural sciences.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

I have studied chemistry intensely for years and currently work as a pharmaceutical chemist. I have tutored more than a dozen students, and taught more than a dozen different classes. I absolutely love the subject.

Organic Chemistry

My teaching experience is extensive, ranging from lecturer to teaching assistant positions:

Throughout my undergraduate and graduate school career at Johns Hopkins I acted as a teaching assistant for numerous courses, ranging from organic chemistry lab to honors organic chemistry lecture. I have TA'd more than a dozen classes.

I have also taught at the college level, and prior to moving to California I was a lecturer at Montgomery College in Maryland. I taught organic chemistry lab at this school.

In addition to my college teaching experience, I also have experience teaching science and engineering at the 4th grade level, having volunteered with an organization and spent 2 days a week teaching "at-risk" youth in Baltimore City public schools.

I have tutored 10 students in the last 4 years, all of whom did quite well. Most of my experience is in organic chemistry, however I have a strong, big picture understanding of most natural sciences, and would love to bring my enthusiasm for teaching, and for science to students.
