UC Davis (Japanese)
My passion for tutoring started when I started learning Japanese in college. Every day, as I learned Japanese, I would voluntarily teach my Japanese tutors Mandarin and English as a gratitude in return. Given that English is my second language, I understand the challenges of a beginner. In addition, I have developed methods that help students learn effectively.
I enjoy the coaching process, and I feel accomplished when I see students master every little phrase from scratch. Also, I love having conversations with people from different age groups and backgrounds. These conversations have helped me understand the way of different cultures. I am a native speaker of Cantonese and Mandarin and have acquired Japanese proficiency through college study. I am looking forward to meeting you and answering your questions. Connie is amazing and talented! She's multilingual which was why I sought after her for assistance in both Japanese and Mandarin. She's also been very adaptable to my progress and attentive to my learning abilities--I tend to learn phrases/expressions very quickly and I need to put in a lot more frustrating effort into mastering characters/sound syllables as I struggle with that part. She can also be direct if you want her to be :) There's no need to be PC with me.
Connie did a great job of assessing my current level. She asks me open-ended questions about the Genki chapter that help me with my listening and conversational skills. She is flexible with the pace of the lesson, knowing which exercises to emphasize. She is patient as I process my response to a question, which is especially helpful for someone learning and soft-spoken.
Connie did an excellent job during the first lesson to get a feel for my current level, and created a lesson on demand tailored to my current abilities. We reviewed hirigana and katakana, then practiced reading and grammar. She never once seemed frustrated with my lack of ability to read Japanese well, and was very patient.
Connie is an awesome tutor, I really enjoy my time with her. She is very knowledgeable, patient and she really helps drive the sessions so that I feel I learned and practiced a lot.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified because I am a native speaker in Cantonese and Mandarin, and have been tutoring for 6 years. I studied Chinese language at UC Davis and was also a teacher's assistance to help students to correct their grammar and pronunciation. My students range from elementary students to adults, from different ethnicity and cultural backgrounds. Because of this, I understand the challenges students have based on their ethnicity and cultural backgrounds. Since I believe learning should be a fun activity, I heavily utilize social media such as YouTube, drama, songs, etc, to create an environment to help students immerse into the Chinese language.
I graduated at UC Davis with B.A. degree in Japanese.
