About John

I am a graduate student in the Master of Fine Arts program at Saint Mary's College of California and a graduate teaching fellow in the College's Writing Across the Curriculum Center, advising graduate and undergraduate students in writing, facilitating writing workshops, editing essays for publication, and speaking in rhetoric & composition research presentations.

I teach high school and middle school English Literature, English Language Learners, and Writing. I previously worked as a tutor and academic mentor for high school students online.

I have been an active writer since high school, when I took journalism and was an editor for my school's creative writing publication. During my undergraduate years, I was a member of the International English Honor Society, Sigma Tau Delta, during which time I tutored in the University writing center and was an editorials contributor for the University newspaper. Currently, I am a contributing writer and editor for a nonprofit that serves veterans, and I am writing my first full-length work, an autobiographical novel.

I am passionate about teaching, tutoring, and academic mentoring. While I have been a classroom teacher for years, I also love working with students one-on-one; doing so allows students to move much faster through the learning process. I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

For several years, I was employed as a pastoral staff-member in a San Francisco Bay Area church, during which time I taught the bible in Sunday services and bible studies. Prior to that, I was a volunteer staff-member, teaching and studying the bible for over a decade. I teach English Literature in a private Christian school which requires discussion of Judeo-Christian theology and scripture in every class.
