I am an experienced tutor and experienced mom! I understand kids, having worked in the SF Unified School district in special and regular education for over 10 years. I have an adopted daughter who has struggled with sensory and other health issues and advocated and worked with her until she began to make significant progress. I have tutored reading, spelling, and writing for 5 years. I have training in the phonic and phonemic awareness methods such as the Slingerland method and various multi sensory Lindamood-Bell methods such as Seeing Stars. I prepare a great deal for my sessions with students, making them engaging, and tailoring them to the parents requests and the students particular needs and interests. I have used the reading fluency method, Read Naturally, to help students improve their reading rate. I am systematic so that lessons can build on each other. I am creative and diligent. I bring reading games to keep students motivated. I love seeing students progress, seeing them go from not wanting to read to enjoying the written word.

I know how to teach all the phonic vowel patterns, systematically. I have materials that work on blends, and how to break and read multi syllable words . I work with nonsense words a lot so that the student can't just memorize sight words (although memorizing has it's place, for sure!)
I know the spelling rules and can teach them using multi-sensory methods such as Seeing Stars. I can teach students to organize their work and binders. I have them use graphic organizers to organize their thoughts before writing paragraphs that compare and contrast, persuade, and also narrative writing assignments such as writing about a small moment.
Certified reading specialists charge $120 an hour so my rates are very affordable, especially considering I have much training in the methods a reading specialist would use. My schedule is pretty flexible. Please contact me to learn more about how I can help your child and to set up a first lesson to determine the best programs to use. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I took trainings in Lindamood-Bell program and such as Seeing Stars and LIPS and was a Slingerland assistant where I learned the Slingerland program and went on to work with dyslexic students (and other struggling readers) for a few years, using these multi-sensory phonics program. These trainings taught me how to work with students who have a weaknesses in the areas of phonemic awareness and phonological processing so they can now identify and categorize sounds, blend them to form new words and delete or add sounds to form new words. My students "word attack" skills have improved and they can also picture non-phonetic words as a whole--words that don't play by the rules such as "enough".

I use Orton-Gillingham's interactive website to systematically teach and provide proper multisensory practice of spelling rules (with letter tiles, cubes, air-writing, finger tapping, writing in sand, etc). I create dictations which provides scaffolding for students learning all spelling patterns from one syllable closed vowels to double letter endings, open syllables, magic (silent) e words, as well as multi syllable vowel patterns, blend combinations and so on. I teach the spelling of prefixes and suffixes.
I have worked with students on color coding and organizing their binders and notebooks, using highlighters of various colors to pick out important points or contrasting arguments in their reading and when studying for tests. I teach them skimming and scanning techniques to pick out key points in their reading, such as main ideas, implicit information regarding the author's purpose, metaphor, and themes.
