About Edwina

At my community college, I was recommended to be an English tutor at the Student Learning Center by my English teacher because she thought my writing skills were strong enough to help other students. I spent 1 school year tutoring students from many different backgrounds in 30 minutes sessions until I transferred to UC Berkeley.

I continued tutoring for a little bit while I was a student at Berkeley. For one semester, I tutored 2nd grade Chinese American students in downtown Oakland, and the following summer I tutored 3rd grade Chinese students in different cities for about a month.

I tutor because I like to see what students are thinking about and expressing on paper. I prefer 1 on 1 tutoring sessions because it helps me to become familiar with my student's voice and writing style. For me, writing out my thoughts helps me to organize them and articulate them more clearly, whether it is through an essay or an oral presentation, so I hope that I can help students do this as well.

I feel that I have done my job when a student feels that he or she has become self-sufficient as a result of tutoring. The feeling of success on both our ends is an amazing feeling that I strive for when I tutor.

I particularly enjoy reading personal statements because I love reading stories about people's experiences that shape our understanding of the culture and society that we live in. No two stories are alike, and I appreciate the challenge of fitting a person's life into a limited amount of pages.

My lifelong hobby has been reading. When my parents immigrated to America, they did not know much English, but they knew getting an education was very important, so they have always supported my love for reading. They never minded buying an extra book as opposed to an extra toy when I was younger, so my hobby has never wavered. I am always reading a book because I thirst for knowledge, and overall, reading has helped me to become a better writer.

In addition, I also work in contract administration/ management at a big company for my regular job, where the details of contracts and data entry are very important, so I am very good at proofreading and catching grammatical errors.

I am available on weekday nights and weekends. I do not have set times as I am planning to tutor as a side hobby, so I will coordinate with you based on your schedule and the type of tutoring you need.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
