About Carina

Hi! Do you need extra help in music or chemistry? I can help!

I enjoy teaching and tutoring because I love to see students grow in their understanding and skills. I have a huge love for both subjects and hope that my enthusiasm transfers to you when I tutor.

As a chemistry tutor, I work with a student's individual learning style to help them grasp abstract concepts and apply it to questions. I make sure they learn how to identify types of questions and make sure they have a tool-kit of processes to solve each type of question.

I spent 2 years at CCSF tutoring Chem 32, which covers basic concepts of inorganic and organic chemistry, biochemistry, and physics as they apply to the chemistry and physics of the human body. In addition to regular peer tutoring center students, I held special group tutoring sessions for struggling students with different learning styles and brought 95% of my students up to passing rate. I also tutored privately.

As a music tutor, I give students a sold foundation in music theory so it's not just about plunking keys or making sounds. Piano students learn how to practice properly, and have the option of both learning pieces from books or writing their own songs.

I am a composer, arranger, and pianist with 17 years experience accompanying music in community and church settings. I also have a background in electronic music (SFSU) and sound design as well.

Learning is both a process and a journey that never ends. Let me be your guide through the rough patches! I am available weekday evenings.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

General Music

I have earned 124+ Units in Music from San Francisco State University between 1994-1998, I taught as a private piano teacher from1996-1997 (3 students) and from 2000-2001 (2 students) and I am currently a church choir director (2006-2016). I am constantly teaching music skills to choir members.

Piano

I began formal piano lessons in classical music at the age of 10. As I became a teenager, I learned to accompany small groups, choirs and congregations and would do so for the next 25 years. I majored in the Electronic Music program at SFSU and studied piano privately at a collegiate level for 2 years, at which point I took on students of my own and taught privately.

Sight Singing

I majored in the Electronic Music program at SFSU and passed 3 semesters of ear-training, musicianship and theory. This provided the foundation for 2 decades of singing in local choirs around the SF Bay area. As an experienced choir singer and director, sight-singing is a "bread and butter" skill that lets you read notes on a page, hear it in your head and voice it aloud. I can teach in movable do system using either solf├Ęge syllables or numeric scale degrees. Let the atonal games begin!
