While I may not have years of experience tutoring, I have worked with students before and have enjoyed it very much. I have often been told I am a natural teacher, maybe because I so enjoy helping people learn new things as well as helping them overcome difficulties blocking their progress (I love problem solving!). Currently I am taking a certification course for teaching English as a foreign language. The course has opened my eyes to different learning styles and the importance of sensitivity to this, so that no matter the subject, finding the best way to help someone learn is the key.
For years I worked in the computer games industry as a team leader. With this came the responsibility of mentoring inexperienced co-workers and in some cases, teaching them to use proprietary software. I enjoyed this part of my job - it was always fun to help others learn and in some cases, go on to exceed my skill level!
Success for students is my most important goal. I strive to do this as 'painlessly' as possible. Learning should be a fun process and I think (and have been told) I help make it so!
I have a fascination with languages and having attempted to learn several myself, have an appreciation for what it takes to learn another language. I am currently working on a TEFL certificate and have worked in the past with ESL students. I am an avid reader which has trained my eyes and ears to find and correct mistakes quickly.
My lifelong passion has and continues to be making art in one form or another! After receiving my BFA in Illustration I worked as a freelance illustrator and then in the computer games industry where I expanded my skills to include 3-D modeling. I worked on notable games such as Tombraider, Tiger Woods Golf and Sims 3, building environments and using my illustration skills to draw and paint textures used in the environments and on 3-D models used within the environments. Photoshop was the main software used to create textures for the models and I also use it constantly for photo editing, so have much experience with the software, including key shortcuts. I taught an adult drawing class based on teaching students a new way to 'see' in order to draw better (based on Betty Edward's book 'Drawing from the RIght Side of the Brain') and have used my drawing skills constantly while working in the computer games industry for everything from concept sketches to story boards. I have always loved taking photographs and have owned many different kinds of cameras over the years. I don't consider myself a professional photographer, but an avid hobbyist who knows a lot about cameras and how to achieve what you want in a photograph, from action photos to still life, to post editing for enhancement or special effects.
I hope you will give me the opportunity to work with you and help you be the successful student you are striving to be. Please contact me if you would like more information or if you would like to schedule a lesson. I look forward to meeting you and to helping you reach your goals! Rebecca did a wonderful job helping my daughter focus on the basics of drawing. She engaged my twelve year old and adjusted the lesson to meet my daughter's specific abilities. We look forward to the next lesson with Rebecca! I highly recommend her!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a BFA in Illustration and have worked commercially as an artist for 20 years. I taught an adult drawing course through a community college using 'Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain' as a course guide. Students learned a lot and were very pleased to have improved their drawing skills. I understand what it takes to visually communicate on paper and am good at spotting what and where the problems are.
I have always loved shooting photographs and, while I am not a professional photographer, I consider myself a semi-pro. I own and use several different DSLR cameras with a variety of lenses (Nikon 200, Olympus E-PL2), have belonged to photo clubs and have taken courses and workshops over the years to improve my skills. I have a good working knowledge of the basics of photography - how cameras work, how to get the photo one is after by using the correct settings from aperture, to shutter speed to ISO settings, when/how to use a tripod and how to work with lighting. In addition, my art background has helped me develop the all important ability to see compositions through the camera lens.
