Are you ready to make a difference in the world?

Let’s work to bring your vision to life: dream college, inspiring job, creating new habits for success in school and beyond, rocking the school system and understanding deeper context in what you are learning.

For over 12 years, I have globally mentored students aged 9 – 65. I am a lifelong learner, looking to understand deeper, gain more perspective and create bridges between differing opinions. I graduated magna cum laude from the honors college at Boston University (full academic scholarship).

My specialties:

+ Bringing joy & purpose back into education,
+ Removing learning blockages,
+ Helping students to understand the big picture and finding their place in it.
+ Empowering students to recover passion in the learning process while improving their grades!

My approach: I offer tools & frameworks to empower you to see a different future and take initiative to challenge a broken world. Without joy in learning, education is just checking boxes. Catalyzing inspiration, I mentor intellectually curious youth and those who are challenged within standard education.

My experience ranges working in peacebuilding as a US diplomat, journalism & public relations (former Soviet Union) and studying with indigenous Andean elders. I’ve lived/worked in 28 countries in Africa, Europe, Latin America. Having seen so many perspectives, sessions serve as a bridge to the world outside the school curriculum to help you to experience rather than to just learn something from a book.

Youth struggle because the school system lacks context affecting motivation. Whether we work together on history, political science, environment, writing, languages or college counseling, students will learn better when they understand why this matters, which leads to improved grades.

I’m excited to work with you! Please reach out with any questions or to schedule.

Career Development,

Career Development

I worked in a variety of fields in different countries: as a journalist, professor, teacher, tutor, human rights specialist, editor, and an activist. For each job, I had to refine my skills and see about how to apply it to the organization and what their needs might be. Additionally I designed programs in workforce development around the world, primarily in Africa and in the Balkans to optimize the best ways for youth to use their skills. I have contacts in many different fields having worked in U.S. Embassies and can link individuals to mentors or people for specific technical advice about what it is like to work in that field for possible internships even.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I offered a course on professional communications on giving presentations and speeches at the university-level for one year in the Republic of Georgia to mid-level and senior-level professionals. The course included recording one's self giving presentations in one's non-native language successfully, receiving constructive criticism and watching other student's performance for giving feedback. Over the period of the course, all students improved. Additional experience includes mentoring and tutoring youth in giving media statements for advocacy campaigns. The youth demonstrated improved confidence and skills at navigating speaking in potentially nerve-racking situations with grace and charm.

ESL/ESOL

I taught ESL in Spain to children, youth and adults, as well as global studies to non-native speakers. I developed my own materials to make class interesting for the kids/youth of all levels, no English to advanced. I worked with adult professionals to learn and apply what was most pertinent for their jobs. I am CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certified.
French,

French

French was my entry into the world of foreign languages. I began when I was six with simple songs followed by classes and immersion in France when I was 13. I learned quickly to have a native accent as it was the only way to be included in France. I lived in Nice, Grenoble and Paris where I studied French literature, culture, language and politics. I studied at L'Institut des Etudes Politiques in Paris for my undergraduate degree looking at the role race, nationalism and identity has shaped French and European politics. I also studied French art and business, taking all my coursework in French. I worked for a UN sponsored NGO Environnement Sans Frontieres which teaches youth on human rights and how the use of drugs contribute to wars, instability and violence overseas. My minor at university was in French.
Proofreading,

Proofreading

Proofreading is second nature to me. It's not what you say most the time, but how you say it and is it the right message for your reader? I worked as a journalist and editor for three years and report writer for newspapers, international governments, as well as the U.S. Government for seven additional years. I have taught English as a Second Language and am a natural grammar master and editor. I'm that person that finds the style and wording error in the middle of a long document. Government documents can be very long and attention spans are short - they say like a goldfish, 13 seconds - so it's critical to intrigue and garner interest from the reader immediately. These are skills I offer and can assist you with.

Spanish

For those looking to learn Spanish, hola a todos y todas! Spanish is a language very near and dear to my heart. I hold U.S. State Department certified professional fluency. I offer a unique combination of native fluency and accent learned in my early twenties. Spanish was my fourth language and favorite one due to its inherent poetry and the intricacies of each country where it is spoken. I worked and/or studied Spanish with accredited schools for almost five years in Panama, Colombia Argentina and Spain, as well as in Guatemala. Having lived extensively in the Spanish-speaking world, I am very familiar the difficulties an English speaker might have in learning to read, write and speak Spanish. I can help students with pronunciation, grammar and cultural differences. I offer a neutral accent and can teach different accents if necessary. I have given media interviews during my human rights work in Uruguay, Argentina and Guatemala. I’ve successfully learned five languages (French, Spanish, German, Bosnian and Georgian) and can offer studying tips for learning vocabulary, intonation/pronunciation and how to “fake-it, till you make it!” I also offer experience working in human rights and peacebuilding in Latin America and can provide assistance in finding internships or connections in Latin America to broaden a student's exposure with the language.

Study Skills

Study Skills

Study skills are important to learn at all ages. I've been teaching study skills to youth around the world for the past eleven years. In the Former Soviet Union, students simply memorized and did not question nor learn much and were disadvantaged later. In a classroom and one-on-one setting, I taught teenagers and young adults the basics of how to successfully apply knowledge by taking notes and developing one's own opinions based on the teacher's lecture and reading materials. I focus on getting students to understand the why behind the issue and apply critical thinking, and practice teaching it back to me. I offer students successful strategies to evaluate and prioritize tasks and then gauge the time needed. Once you master this, everything is within your reach! In high school I took advanced classes with a GPA over 4.0 while traveling around the country as a competitive sailor. At university, I sailed daily, as well as studied diverse subjects (art, politics, multiple languages, humanities) and studied overseas. It's allotting a certain amount of time to the subject, seeing what is needed to progress and executing the plan.

Is reading, literature and grammar challenging? Grammar comes second nature to me - I loved it as a kid - diagramming sentences, the nuances of vocabulary. I have a CELTA certification in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) and spent three years around the world and teaching foreign policy and social sciences overseas to non-native speakers. Teaching is my passion, tutoring and mentoring comes along with it. I'm creative and resourceful at getting people interested in topics they do not like and make it fun for all while getting the results you want.

Writing

Writing

Writing and how to demonstrate critical thinking in developing essays for school, college entrance exams and beyond are a specialty of mine. I spent two years in the Republic of Georgia at the Center for Social Studies and the Georgian University for Social Sciences teaching young adults critical thinking and expressive communications through practicing presentations and articulate essay writing, something that is critical for both school, as well as in the workplace and for lobbying for a cause that calls your heart. I also ranked students for admissions and reading applications. I worked as a journalist and editor for three years and report writer for newspapers, international governments, as well as the U.S. Government for seven additional years. I have taught English as a Second Language and am a natural grammar master and editor. I'm that person that finds the style and wording error in the middle of a long document. History

American History,

American History

American history is a favorite of mine - to the history of California, that which built the U.S. is fascinating in that it is the history of birth of a country and that of its citizens. I received a 5 on the AP U.S. History test as a Junior. I offer tips for study skills, writing essays based on fact, as well as how to advocate your main points and develop a thesis. I offer complimentary materials for students to understand history. Often times history is just that of the historian - I teach students to read between the lines and determine for themselves what really happened. I developed and designed a home school curriculum of Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the U.S." teaching a summer course on social justice to develop critical thinking skills on race dynamics, slavery, and the truth behind slavery and the exploitation of native peoples.
Government & Politics,

Government & Politics

I spent six years working for the U.S. Government overseas as a U.S. Diplomat. Additionally I taught public administration, including the division of the U.S branches of government. I worked for a political party in Spain on a presidential campaign and have been involved in international advocacy campaigns and lobbying - subtle politics for around five years in total. Most work with the government involves a lot of internal politics, all of which I have witnessed first hand. I over an inside look at the U.S. Government, politics and lobbying.
Political Science,

Political Science

I offer seven years experience working as a U.S. Government diplomat and additional experience for a Spanish political party and the Georgian government. If you or your child are looking to learn about modern political statecraft or understand the inner workings of global affairs, you have met your tutor! I spent time working in post-conflict and war zones such as Panama, Colombia, Bosnia, Guatemala and the Republic of Georgia seeing the inner workings of policy-making and history in the works and working with refugees, politicians and local community leaders. I developed and managed international youth programs designed to empower young adults to discover their voice and find jobs that inspired them. I witnessed modern history in Georgia, a part of the former Soviet Union through discovering how the Soviet system still plays a role in the education system and in the hearts and minds of individuals. I also offer insights into life around the world, things not communicated by text books in designing projects with youth and working with youth around the world in civic engagement (advocacy), economic empowerment (finding a job), peacebuilding, and finding their place in their communities. My Master's is in Conflict (ethnic and resources) and my undergraduate degree is in Political Science.
Social Studies,

Social Studies

I worked as a U.S. diplomat for the U.S. government for six years - I enacted policies, advocated for them and advised policy change based on needs in communities. I spent three years as a social activist for human rights issues in Nigeria, Uruguay, Argentina and Georgia. I taught youth to be engaged in civil society. At university I studied the humanities and social sciences in depth, including poetry, art history, modern social movements and specialized in societies in transition or war. My experience in teaching is on American foreign policy, social justice and the American governance model (public administration).
Sociology,

Sociology

Since in high school I have been studying sociology: where the dysfunction lies in society and why it has emerged. At university, I looked at the root causes of social discontent in multiple societies: Western Europe, the former Soviet Union, China, as opposed to countries with deep happiness despite high poverty. At graduate school, my studies looked deeper at the role war and chronic violence has in destroying the social fabric in the Middle East, the former Soviet Union and Latin America, focusing specifically on the role of ideology and the persecution of minorities within a country. I have worked the last ten years in designing peace-building and social cohesion projects to reintegrate post-conflict societies to find ways to reweave the social fabric and trust when all was lost. I offer an academic and real world perspective to sociology. I have taught social justice and rebuilding societies for several years at the university level.
World History

World History

Let's walk through history together! If you or your child are looking to learn about modern or ancient history or understand the inner workings of global affairs, you have met your tutor! I received a 5 on my AP U.S. History exam as a junior. History was my favorite topic at school, probably because it looked at how things happened and how it is often not taught correctly, especially in countries with recent conflicts. In Guatemala, youth still do not know the truth behind the armed conflict there, nor in Georgia and in many other countries. I worked for six years as a U.S. diplomat, seeing the inner workings of policy-making and sometimes history in the works! I spent time working in post-conflict and war zones such as Panama, Colombia, Bosnia, Guatemala and the Republic of Georgia working with refugees, politicians and local community leaders. I developed and managed international youth programs in the developing world, seeing how colonialization still continues to impact countries due to their levels of high poverty and debt.

I have worked the last ten years in designing peace-building and social cohesion projects to reintegrate post-conflict societies to find ways to reweave the social fabric and trust when all was lost. I offer an academic and real world perspective to sociology. I have taught social justice and rebuilding societies for several years at the university level.

I am a holistic vegan chef. When I turned 18, I decided I couldn't eat meat anymore. Since then I've learned how to nourish carnivores and those aspiring for a plant-based diet while following guidelines for health. I prepare my own yogurt, sauerkraut, vegan sour cream and butter. I've spent the last 18 years refining my skills and have worked as a personal chef.
Yoga

Yoga

I offer yoga classes at all levels. I have a 200 hour certification with Yoga Alliance (Yoga Tree SF). I taught youth and adults in high-stress situations in Bosnia for two years. My students were very satisfied with the level of physical, mental and spiritual satisfaction through the journey they experienced during my classes. Additionally, it has been shown that meditation and yoga is helpful to facilitate learning. I began my path of yoga teaching around the world and it was very inspirational. It was something I felt strongly about after seeing how much trauma still existed in Bosnia, so I decided to teach to help them and myself. I live, breathe and feel yoga in each moment, why the challenges are there and what they have to teach me. I also taught meditation at U.S. Embassies for two years. I have a 200 hour yoga certification from Yoga Tree in San Francisco.

ESL/ESOL,

Spanish,

Writing

Government documents can be very long and attention spans are short - they say like a goldfish, 13 seconds - so it's critical to intrigue and garner interest from the reader immediately. These are skills I offer and can assist you with.

College Counseling

College Counseling

I taught at the university for three years at the Master's level in the Republic of Georgia at two universities, The Center for Social Studies and the Georgian University for Social Sciences. Additionally, I interviewed student, reviewed and ranked entrance essays and personal statements by measuring potential, passion, and interest by the applicants. My experience also includes mentoring young adults to realize their full potential, to envision their dreams and bring them to fruition. I include career development with advising on internships, language choices and volunteering suggestions to improve their standings for jobs and university entrance. I am also a life coach and help individuals see the paths they need to take to get the end results they wish to achieve.

“Thanks Mom for getting me a fun tutor!”

Believe me I have tried all the outlining, repeat this five times and write this ten times. We explain concepts over and over every night. But this is the first time we tried fun and engaging the material on his level. And it worked! He learned ideas, went below the surface of the facts and wants to meet Stephenie again. Remember when they told you that ADHD learners have to care about the material in order to learn? We’ll it’s true. Try Stephanie and watch while your kid learns, instead of slogs.

She was good at multitasking in the kitchen and had a good knowledge of food

Stephanie taught us about food and what it can do for our bodies and do our own recipes for cooking. She made us feel welcomed and gave us an amazing experience.

I highly recommend her!

Stephanie is fantastic! Her knowledge and experience as a foreign service officer has been exceptionally helpful in my job search. She has provided great advice and input on my resume, cover letters, mock interviews, and connecting me with people in her network. Stephanie is also a joy to talk to, I highly recommend her.

An Amazing Tutor and an Amazing Human Being

Stephanie began tutoring me in July of 2021 to help me finish my final paper required for my final class of my Bachelor's degree in Global Studies. The paper was a detailed exposé on carbon capture technology; her knowledge base and excellent writing coaching skills helped me to transform the paper into something that I, and my professor, could be proud of. She is most certainly a skilled editor and proofreader, and her mentoring helped me to activate some of the writing skills that I honestly had forgot that I had. After my degree was conferred in August of 2021, I realized that I could very much use a tutor to help me flesh out my life and career goals, and measurable actions that could be taken to achieve them, day by day. The conversations I have had with Stephanie, so far, have been immensely helpful to me both in terms of my career and with my personal life. She is an amazing conversationalist and knowledgeable on a great deal of topics, but I feel as though she really shines when having conversations with her students in which she mentors them to lead healthy and productive lives. This is, of course, in addition to the skill set and knowledge she demonstrates for academic writing and in the fields of political science and the social sciences. She knows how to ask the right questions, and give thought-provoking and helpful responses in conversations with a wide variety of subject matter. She is very encouraging and wants every single one of her students to develop both in their academic careers, in their post-graduate careers, in their personal lives and relationships, and in the health of their mind and body. It is for these reasons that I intend to continue working with Stephanie for the foreseeable future, and would encourage anyone and everyone with interests in her subject matter, or needs in her subject matter, to establish a relationship with her and see where it goes. After your first lesson, I promise you that you will not be disappointed.

Energetic and Insightful Tutor

Stephanie helped my high school aged son prepare an application for admittance into a selective school program. She spent time to truly understand what the program was about so she could best assist my son. Stephanie also has a knack for figuring out a student's interest and then help them structure their answers accordingly. My son was so intrigued after their first session, that for the next two hours he continued to discuss with me their conversation. I highly recommend Stephanie for tutoring young adults!
