Hi prospective students! My name is Stephanie and I have five years experience teaching - thank you for considering me! Teaching has always come natural to me. I believe success in school comes from a passion you have for the love of learning and understanding its importance. My father through his dedication of architecture and passion for excellence, is what set me out on the right foot. I aced most of my AP tests (French, U.S. History, Biology, etc.). It's about giving it your best shot and not giving up even when you aren't sure how to answer the questions. I received an academic scholarship to a prestigious private university, Boston University. I'd love to show you how fun learning can be and how to adapt it to where you want to go.
I am an avid life-long learner, even as a small child, learning for me is an entry into a world of knowledge, one of which I wanted more and more. My teaching style is the same: filled with excitement and passion. I bring pages to life and help students to experience what the book is saying. I communicate that joy to my students, infusing them with that same love of learning. As a teacher, I have three goals: to help students improve their communication and comprehension skills, to build self-confidence and understanding of the material, and to enjoy learning! I believe learning should be interesting, challenging and fun.
My tutoring style is tailored to students needs. One of my favorite things about tutoring is learning what inspires you about the subject? From there, I can help tailor the learning program and put it into perspective. Having seen so many perspectives around the world, I apply it to my tutoring and offer it as a bridge to the world outside the school curriculum to help you to experience the lesson rather than to just learn something from a book. I am committed to this student-centered tutoring and flexibly adapt lessons to where the student is on that particular day. Specifically, I tune to how you as the student learn through visual, auditory or kinesthetic methods to offer strategies for studying. I view tutoring as the opportunity to empower my students to learn creatively, to be innovative and look at challenges as tests of their characters and giving them the skills to fly over them successfully. Having spent time in the Republic of Georgia where memorization of teachers' lessons was the only way of learning. I prioritize how to get you to internalize the concepts. In case of restlessness, I also can incorporate a bit of gentle yoga or meditation into the tutoring to help you or your child be able to learn more effectively and be more confident.
My academic background is diverse learning both at university and through practice in internships. As a child I never really understood why people would fight so much and with my grandfather fighting in World War I. For those reasons I decided to do my Masters' in Conflict Studies at the London School of Economics. I graduated magna cum laude from Boston University in Comparative Politics and French. I believe strongly in the need to be a renaissance man or woman so my studies also included the arts in great depths: dance, art history, literature, humanities, philosophy and anthropology. I spent time studying at L'Institut des Etudes Politiques (Political Science University) in Paris. I interned with a UN-partnered organization that educates youth about the linkage of drug usage with trafficking and human rights abuses. To broaden my education, I interned with a political party on a winning presidential campaign and to balance the politics, I also studied flamenco.
Teaching and Education has been central to my career; I worked as a professor at the International Black Sea University and the Georgian University of Social Sciences for three years and as a full-time teacher at a Spanish language school for one year where I taught toddlers, children, young adults and students in their prime years. Building confidence and helping youth to speak their minds are essential skills and part of my tutoring practice: I mentored and taught advocacy to young adults and adults on human rights campaigns in Argentina and the Republic of Georgia. On the big picture, I worked on education policy and reform in the former Soviet Union in the Republic of Georgia for two years at the Georgian Ministry of Education.
My professional life also included working for six years as a U.S. diplomat, seeing the inner workings of policy-making and history in the works! I spent time working in post-conflict and conflict zones such as Panama, Colombia, Bosnia, Guatemala and the Republic of Georgia working with refugees, politicians and local community leaders. My specialty was designing and managing projects to improve the quality of life and implement solutions for their empowerment, such as education, social justice, finding decent work and reconciliation. I witnessed the impact the Soviet Union has on blossoming democracies, colonial legacies dragging developing countries to find their way to compete with their previous oppressors. I also offer insights into life around the world, things not communicated by text books in designing projects with youth and working with youth around the world.
With regards to lesson planning and accountability, integrity is very important to me - I do my best to make sure students are satisfied and help them to be comfortable with school and studying. I am always flexible with my time in case a make-up lesson is needed as well. It's not about the money but if the student has learned and found joy in it.
Let's learn together! Feel free to email me to ask questions or to schedule. I'm excited for these new opportunities and getting to know you. Looking forward to it.
Sweet, helpful, knowledgeable tutor.
Stephanie first is a very nice an patient tutor. She helped me in numerous ways. First, she helped me brainstorm for an essay on international relations. I wrote about the Syria Crisis and she helped explain everything and then put ideas on paper. Then, after my essay was written, she proofread and provided feedback. Lastly, as a graduating senior, I needed help looking for jobs. She put me in contact with numerous of her past coworkers and connections. I would definitely recommend Stephanie! Will, 2 lessons with StephanieTutor responded:
Thanks, Will! It's been so great working with you for your essays. International Relations was my favorite courses, and major, at university so have enjoyed reviewing your essays with regards to case studies and international relations theory. I also love helping students with the practical elements of how to find a job and present yourself to future employers! When you have such a huge network of contacts - I like to connect like-minded people so we all can make a difference in this world.
Very pleasant and flexible
I was having a hard time finding a Spanish tutor in (or willing to come to) my neighborhood and, although she actually lives quite far, Stephanie tried hard to accommodate us in both location and schedule. My 7.5-yd old daughter had a couple of lessons with her that went very well; Stephanie did a great job of making Spanish (a new language for her) fun and engaging, while teaching her quite a bit of vocabulary in such a short time.Pierre, 2 lessons with StephanieTutor responded:
Pierre, Aline is the sweetest young student. Wishing you and your family a lovely quadrilingual future!
Stephanie is knowledgeable, enthusiastic and hard-working. She worked hard to get both girls (ages nine and 11) engaged and actively learning. They're having a great time!Carmen, 4 lessons with StephanieTutor responded:
Carmen, it was such a treat working with your girls to boost their fluency before heading to Spain.
Stephanie is a professional, knowledgeable, and patient tutor. She is passionate about helping her students. I originally had tutoring with her for my application, yet she also gave me advice on what I need for my future career, such as creating Linkdin account, getting internships, and elevator pitches: how to tell what I want to do in a short period of time. I highly recommend to have tutoring with StephanieTakashi, 5 lessons with StephanieTutor responded:
Takashi, I loved helping you with your essays, building your confidence in writing and speaking your truth for the personal statement. I also enjoyed helping you see the bigger picture about getting career experience even while studying. You'll have a long future in architecture!!!
