About Kyle

Originally from Hawai’i, I received my bachelor’s degree in Biology with Molecular Emphasis from Dominican University of California. I have 3 years of experience working with high school and grade school students through Huckleberry Youth Program and Hanlin Academy. I also recently completed a Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medical Certificate program at Notre Dame de Namur University and aspire to be a Pediatrician in the Bay Area. I enjoy working with kids and motivating them to success through hard work and determination. My areas of expertise include guitar, basketball, and chess.

I have been playing guitar for over 10 years and was the lead guitarist for my university's church choir. I'm currently the lead guitarist for St. Theresa's church choir in Daly City. I can teach the basics of playing guitar to people of all ages.

I also played junior varsity and varsity basketball in high school. I was a part of several adult summer leagues as well as church leagues. I hope to continue my love for the game by sharing my knowledge and teaching the fundamentals to kids.

In addition to basketball, I loved playing chess. I started doing Chess tournaments in middle school whilst going up against middle and high schoolers. I was part of a chess team that placed 1st in many competitions, even being invited to state championships that were televised. In high school, I was the founder and President of my chess club at Island Pacific Academy. Teaching beginners how to play or improving experienced players in their game has always been rewarding for me.

My goal is to share my passions with others; and in the process, inspire others to do the same.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Math has always been my strongest subject in school, including Algebra 1. I have experience tutoring high school students in Mathematics. I was also a Kumon tutor and homework helper and I have supervised over 50+ kids (K-6th) at a time. I enjoy helping them grow a passion for learning and watching them develop.

Basketball

I have been playing basketball for over 20 years. I made both the JV and Varsity teams in high school where I played Point Guard, Shooting Guard, and Small Forward positions. During my summer and winter breaks, I was also active in many city, church, and adult basketball leagues. While attending Dominican University of California I ruptured my achilles tendon playing, thus ending my basketball career. While it was a personal choice to focus primarily on my goal of becoming a Pediatrician, I hope to continue my love for the game by teaching children of all ages how to play.

If you're looking for a physical activity to get your child off the couch, basketball is a sport that your boy or girl can start at an early age. Playing basketball helps them learn basic coordination and team-building skills with an added bonus of making new friends along the way. Getting your child going with basic basketball skills at a young age not only helps encourage exercise, but serves as a foundation for staying active later in life.

Chess

I have been playing chess since the age of nine. During junior high, I competed and placed first place as a team for many tournaments. In addition, I was the founder and president of the chess club at my high school. I enjoy working with kids (K-6th) but I am open to help teach any age who wants to learn how to play the game and learn the basics. Your child does not have to be the next Bobby Fischer in order to reap the many rewards that chess has to offer. Simply learning the game and spending time practicing it is enough to raise IQ, improve memory and enhance creativity. It’s also a special hobby that they will cherish for the rest of their lives!

Elementary Science

I love science and teaching to young children. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Molecular Cell Biology with a minor in Chemistry. I have experience tutoring high school students through Huckleberry in the Sciences and Mathematics. I was also a Kumon tutor and homework helper through Hanlin Academy. I have supervised over 50+ kids (K-6th) at a time. I enjoy helping them grow a passion for learning and watching them develop.

Guitar

I have been playing the guitar for over seven years and was the lead guitarist for my university's church choir. I can adapt to any music style of the student's interests. My primary goal is to teach students basic chords, picking, timing, and elementary songs for beginners and eventually over time and experience any song of the student's choosing.

A Chinese philosopher Confucius said long ago that "Music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without." Your child may not be the next Beethoven, but he or she may have an easier time learning math, practicing good manners (including patience!), and becoming a team player.
