About RYan

The blank page has its appeal. Open, undefined, yet-to-be. Type a phrase. Jot a thought. Let your fingers fly. The practice of writing and the skills of reading are simple. However, each require work to develop. I have developed my own through the rigors of research and demands of academic life. Yours may be just budding or already well articulated. No matter the project, and where you are, I want to read what you have to say. Let's craft something together.

As a PhD candidate in medical anthropology at UCSF, I have extensive knowledge of the anthropological literature, and would enjoy touring you through any concepts you'd like to explore.

To sit with an idea, craft a story, and immerse the reader in your perspective may be challenging, but it's worth it. I promise. I have published in academic journals, produced articles for university websites, and reviewed the books of big names in my discipline. Each writing project began with a quiet idea, just a phrase, or an incomplete thought, but soon enough, developed into something bigger, something worth pursuing. This is the art of English.

We're social animals, well organized and arguably, well tamed. The social side of life is intuitive if you allow it to be.

When I'm not reading books and writing articles, I'm running hills and throwing lacrosse balls at walls. As a player, coach, and referee, I've seen every side of the game. While primarily an attackman, I've played lots of midfield, and enjoy working with defenders as well as goalies.

My schedule is flexible. I can work with you once to complete a project, or on a regular basis to hone your skills. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I am a PhD candidate in medical anthropology at the University of California, San Francisco and Berkeley. I have completed extensive training in the field, both in theory and method. I have publications in development, and am crafting a dissertation. I have also taught a course on the subject to master's students in Global Health Sciences.
