About Stephan

Stephan has been training and competing in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu since 1998. He received his black belt in 2010 from Professor Eduardo Rocha after winning 6 gold medals at brown belt level in various national and international tournaments (2010 IBJJF Houston International: Gold, 2009 California Classic: Gold, 2009 NAGA East Coast: Gold, 2010 Copa Pacifica: Gold, 2009 IBJJF American Nationals: Gold, 2009 American Cup: Gold). He has ten solid years of adult teaching experience as well as developing radically different models for teaching Brazilian jiu-jitsu to children. His personal philosophy regarding martial arts is that it should be accessible and inviting to all, regardless of gender, sexual orientation or fitness level. He also coached gymnastics for children and adults at Head over Heels, Santa Cruz Gymnastics and Kid in Motion for nearly 8 years from 1996-2004. In addition, he is a California Certified classroom teacher having taught in Oakland Unified School District for six years and Katherine Burke School for Girls.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
