Both my parents were writers, and they fostered in me a love of the English language and life-long reading and writing habits. I've been a freelance journalist for 15 years. Currently I write for a quarterly film magazine and several political websites. I feel my passion for the written word helps me to be an effective and committed teacher.
I'm a graduate of UC Berkeley Continuing Education's TESOL certificate program, and have been teaching ESL at a community center in Oakland for several months. Before that I had great experiences as a volunteer tutor at the English Center in Oakland. I loved meeting and getting to know students and learning about their lives and cultures, and got a great deal of satisfaction from helping them learn English.
While enrolled in the UC Berkeley TESOL program, I taught ESL as a volunteer at the Asian Immigrant Women Advocates (AIWA) center in Oakland's Chinatown. I also had several ESL teaching assignments from The English Center in Oakland before taking on my current teaching job.
Please contact me for more information. I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have or to provide references regarding my teaching and tutoring. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have extensive experience working as a freelance writer, researcher, proofreader, and editor. My articles, reviews, and interviews have been published in CounterPunch, In These Times, The San Francisco Bay Guardian, The San Francisco Chronicle, The San Francisco Bay View, patch.com, Noir City, and other outlets.
In 2009 I completed a four month internship at The San Francisco Bay Guardian, where I gathered information and wrote background memos for editors Steve Jones and Tim Redmond. During that time I also wrote news stories, book reviews, and one film piece which appeared in the Bay Guardian.
Earlier, I was an intern at The Nation magazine in New York City. I worked with investigative reporter Allan Nairn, researching and compiling background information for his pieces, and editing several of Nairn’s articles.
This work has given me an excellent command of English. My tutoring skills have also been enhanced by my experience teaching ESL at The English Center and The Vietnamese-American Community Center of the East Bay (both in Oakland), and tutoring at the English Center.
