About Carlos

I am a passionate physiology/biology faculty member at San José City College and a physiology instructor at SFSU. I love science, have an insatiable curiosity, and am passionate about education. I subscribe to the philosophy that knowledge means little if it can’t be effectively communicated to the public and the next generation of creators, artists, scientists, and thinkers. With this in mind, I have dedicated myself to working as a mentor and award-winning instructor within all levels of education: from serving as a physiology lecturer for pharmacy students at UCSF to lecturing for post-bac students at San Francisco State University to working as a “visiting scientist” and mentor in a program for underprivileged K-12 students at San Francisco’s Mission High School. Additionally, I currently serve as a visiting fellow within UC Berkeley’s Context-Based RET program. This program is designed to provide fellows with the skills to promote classroom teaching of leading-edge science concepts in the context of real life applications as a means to excite and retain STEM students. Thus, I not only have extensive teaching experience, but I have also received formal training in how to be an effective educator, specifically at the community college level.

Ultimately, what I love about tutoring is that I can tailor the class/lesson to the particular student. In a large class setting each student is coming in with their own background and experience: some have a lot of experience in science classes, others do not. Some have a lot of confidence working independently, others don't. By allowing for a time where I can work one-on-one with a student, identify what specific concepts they are struggling with, and work together to cater my lessons to their educational needs, I believe tutoring creates the most unique and productive educational experience for you, the student.

I have a bachelor's degree in biological physics from Rice University and a master’s degree in biomedical sciences (with a focus on genetics) from UC San Francisco (UCSF), a nationally renowned research and biomedical university. As a graduate student at UCSF, I directed the execution of a variety of research projects, including the analysis of a large-scale genetic study, and now have over 5 years of experience working independently in a research setting. I still perform research at UCSF.

My students often use three words to describe me: enthusiastic, caring, and dedicated. I believe that while science is often difficult, it should also be fun. With a combination of experience as a physiology instructor at multiple institutions, technical research expertise, and enthusiasm for science and physiology, I will make sure you not only better learn the material but that you also have a blast doing so.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Really knows Bio, Very patient and fun, my son loves him — Carlos is about as good as it gets in tutoring. He is patient, kind and even fun. My son always looks forward to his sessions with Carlos. And Carlos is completely knowledgeable about the subject area (My son is in Molecular Biology). My son gets a lot of work done, learns a lot, and enjoys his time with Carlos. It could not be any better. ...
